Bathtubs

We're getting a bathroom redone. Mostly it's a simple rip and replace. We want to put a tub in it so that there's at least one bathroom in the house that has one.

The question is which one is better to buy:

It's one or the other unfortunately. The project is going fast and we didn't really have too much time to consider our options. The builder got the one below from HD, but is one that we're going to either return, trash or let him have. we don't like the sound or the feel.

White. Or the closest to regular white you can get. Colors go in and out of style. White never goes out of style and matches everything.

The "bone" color reminds me of something from the 70's or 80's.

Is it my monitor or is the first one pink? If so.. NOT the first link .

A shame can't get something like a clawfoot tub *shrugs* but as far as material, I can't advise. Just color.

Get any colour (or color) you want, as long as it's white...

Nunya's nailed it - you can always use shower curtain and accessories to dress it up, but plain, clean white is never out of style.

As for the actual tub - I have fibreglass ones in the new house, and replaced an old steel tub with fibreglass at my last place. A cheap tub is a cheap tub, no matter what it's made of - a couple extra bucks up front can make a world of difference... I like American Standard and Jacuzzi - both of which are stock items at most Lowes... Go, look at the displays, find one with a feel and style you like. They should have stock for pretty much everything on display.

I do really like the oval or peanut style - gives the feeling of more space, but maybe that's just me...

Sorry. Wrong link. I was mostly trying to get a gauge on material and not color.

In that case.... Still get white.

The builders tub you posted is probably about the cheapest they make - hollow sounding, tinny and loud...

I like the look and feel of fibreglass - there's more mass there, so doesn't have that tin can feel or sound. That said, they can require a little more care installing and levelling, and it's possible to drop something with enough force to crack the fibreglass, leaving a crack to be repaired, or that requires replacement of the tub altogether. Not a big concern, but not impossible, either.

Stay away from the steel. We did a 75 room Holiday Inn and used steel tubs, they were absolutely junk.

Yeah, when I saw the tub the contractor had picked out, I about crapped. My wife told him to spend up to about $500-$600 and he came back with the thing I posted. I think it was the only slightly deeper tub he could get right then and there.

I told my wife that the money we save on the tub now, we can use to repair the tile wall when we have to rip the bathtub out in a few months because we hate it or it looks like garbage.

Seems to be the common theme. I think I'll limit it to cast iron or fiberglass. Now to see whether I can find one within a day or so.

I don't know about in your area - but up here, Lowes has very excellent stock-levels in the stores...

The tub I got the other year - picked out from the display (Jacuzzi branded soaker jet-tub) - I expected them to say it would be a special order... They appologized because it was going to take 15 minutes to get a forklift, and get it down from the overhead storage for me.

Even if it holds the job up a week, probably better then putting in a tub you hate and planning to change it later... Tiles, plumbing, etc - are always a pain to do over, IMO.

I was looking at Lowes. Everything was saying it would take a week to two to get in stock.

We need a 60x30 tub, which really limits our selection.

Because my wife and i are "aging", I've been thinking about a walk in tub.

They look like a mini hot tub for one person. Granted you are sited so there is no laying down in it. But it looks very easy to get out or in.

Though if I were to do that, then I'd want to turn my entire bathroom into a shower as well. I've seen some ahh porn videos that take place in the bathroom. The bathrooms are either European or Japanese. Anyhow I've seen them with what looks like a shower head above the toilet. I understand that shower head is commonly used for the purposes of cleaning one's self after using the toilet. But the file is tiled and has a built in dran, like a shower stall.
That is kind of how I would like to remodel my bath room if I were. Mainly because having a floor like that would make giving Dogs "baths" so much easier, versus trying to get them into a tub or shower stall.
I know, strange to be watching porn and getting home improvement ideas lol.

k.
I know my son likes the full shower in the master bedroom. His legs were severely atrophied from being in a hospital bed for 6 months. He could step high enough to clear the tub edge.

Hence another reason why I was looking at the walk in bath tubs.

Our kids like our bathroom as well. But we need to have at least one bathtub in the house that's not the master. So they get it. We're redoing our daughter's bathroom also, but it won't have a tub--just a shower.

We thought about that but went for the 14 in tub. We got the AS 60 X 30 X14 in linen ( I think that's the color). Had it for a a year and a half and the height has worked out well.

Screw it. We're biting the bullet and just getting a cast iron Kohler in biscuit. It's very, very close to white but has the slightest color to it. We prefer it over white. Looks slightly less institutional and is a bit warmer. It should go the with travertine and granite we're putting in there. We couldn't bring ourselves to getting the Americast or Vinyl/Acrylic/Fiberglass ones.

Personally, I still would have went white - but colour's a personal choice... Or, in your case, color...

Brand and construction-wise - solid choice (pun, fully intended) - that's the kind of tub that can last a lifetime... I think you'll be very happy with it.

At the end of the day, we figured that for the extra $300 or so, it was probably worthwhile. I'm not sure the contractors are going to love moving a few hundred pounds upstairs . . .

We put in 3 Kohler whirlpool cast iron tubs in one house years ago. They were beautiful, but had to have a backhoe to lift them into the house. Too bad nobody made red w/c to go with them. They had gold plated fixtures that took like 8 months to get. This was probably in'86 or so when gold wasn't as crazy.

Gold colored/plated hardware is thankfully not something we like.
