Re: [BC] My games suck because of high ping, what can I do about

People want me to post screen-shots of my ping in games?

Just fix it already.

People on here asking for your telephone number to help but do nothing and I wonder if they are even real employees.

Is that a serious question ? We volunteer our free time to help user. It certainly not in our job description to action any request we received. I don't even receive any financial compensation or accolade. I am not seeking any either. I do this because I am in a position when I can help.

I game a lot online and I don't believe anyone can really tell the difference between an 15ms ping and 40ms ping response during gameplay. TELUS prefer your connection to be stable first. There is tweak we can do to help but we are not in any obligation whatsoever to guarantee any ping rate. This is the last of our concern. I would be more worry about packet loss and other factor that has a greater effect on your connection.

You should be happy that a TELUS employee acknowledged the problem and provided some information. With other ISP's I have had less helpful support too. And I completely agree with Symtex. First stability then latency.

I'd be happy if the employee followed up on his promise "private message me your number, and I can put you on these profiles"

I did that 3 weeks ago.

Remember that the person you asked for isn't the only on here that works for TELUS.
And just like everyone who works, sometimes other stuff has to come first.
If you needed your ping fixed quicker than 3 weeks ago, you could have just called TELUS...

However, I'm back in the office on Tuesday. If you want, PM me your number, and I can take a look at your line. However, given what you're on, we can't turn water into wine.

I see that you're on a 6Mb/s profile (as per your Actiontec stats.) Since I haven't talked to you yet and don't have your info, I'm not sure if you can get faster speeds.

Initially for my 50Mb/s install, I was put on a 32ms delay profile. After changing that to a 5ms delay profile, my ping did lower a bit, but stability wasn't quite as good and speed wasn't as high. And in all honesty, even after settling on the 16ms profile, it didn't overly change my ping, better or worse.

To answer your other questions though:

I have a pots splitter in the wall here would that make a difference?
POTS splitter > microfilters.

Maybe it should be mounted in the utility room?
What? Your gateway? Your POTS splitter?

Maybe I need a seperate line for the DSL?
A POTS splitter already does this. The line that your modem/gateway plugs into is only for DSL. Plugging a phone into it will give you no dial tone. It's solely for internet.

I'm also only 450M from the phone building
This will not necessarily reduce your pings. It may increase your bandwidth allotment.

OP will surely deliver...

You made me log in to WoW.

Your mileage may vary.

This was taken on Tichondrius. Going to Uldum, my ping is nearly double. I don't notice any difference though.

Ping = the internet gamers' performance placebo.

Excuse my ignorance here but I didn't know that a POTS splitter was noticeably better then micro filters. I'm still using the filters on turbo 25, if I had a POTS splitter would that improve my line quality?

Is there a different POTS splitter for ADSL and VDSL or can the same one be used for both?

I think I have a pots splitter because of the enterphone system.

@ Nas1 > If you have Turbo 25, the tech should have installed a POTS splitter. Filters would just be asking for problems on VDSL. It's possible there is a POTS splitter in there but someone added the filters.

@WhosTheBosch: Yes there is a difference. Plain ADSL (black Wilcom ones) ones won't cut it for VDSL connections & are too old. To my knowledge, Telus only installs the ADSL2+/VDSL2 ones now from Comtest. >http://comtestnetworks.com/our-products/residential-dsl-splitters-cpe/

The white POTS splitters are used indoors typically. The blue ones are rare to find installed indoors as they are not testable by end users.

For example, I've got a white one in my wiring panel:

Thanks for the explanation nss_tech!

I had one installed when only ADSL2+ was available. Would it have been VDSL2 compatible? If it wasn't would it only cause issues with the phone line or the Internet line as well?

Most likely not compatible.
It's not a bad idea to replace it with a newer one anyways. They, along with microfilters, can burn out over time.

If you have an ADSL only POTS splitter and you get put on VDSL, you'd most likely get no sync, or lose sync quite frequently.

Techs are free in this case, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

And NSS_tech, I 3 your cable porn.

Thank you for the reply. From what I can see there is a termination block there but no pots splitter. Is it possible that one could have been installed outside or are they only inside?

Still waiting for Sindows...

Generally POTS splitters are inside. I haven't seen an outside one in a while.

Largely because you don't have an unreasonably high ping within the TELUS system. Your traceroutes show that higher pings are out beyond, not internal to TELUS. You have stable internet, and that is what TELUS provides. No one has ever been able to fix higher pings outside their own network.

Over the years, we have found around DSLR that anyone who is not speaking in an official forum such as Teksavvy Direct or Bell Direct really can't offer much help, no matter what they might say. Doing something unauthorised could mean their job. They may offer a highly informed opinion or practical suggestions, which is what some of the experienced technical people do, but touching physical plant is beyond reasonable expectation.

The high pings could be fixed by peering with other networks. I believe they may fix this in the near future due to employee willingness.

No, it just means you're close to the DSLAM.

For future reference, you can always call into the help desk and ask to be placed on a lower delay profile; Tier 2 can easily do this. They might refuse out of laziness, but then just ask for an escalation and it'll get to the right people.

Can you do that for Turbo 50 as well? How does PhyR come into play?

Optik and Turbo 50 use those profiles (5ms delay) by default. 5ms delay is used as it's the minimum allowed by PhyR. If we go any lower, we lose PhyR and the amount of impulse noise protection will be at least 10x lower.

If you mean the VDSL POTS splitter, then yes that is one of the two places it can be installed.
