1 edit | Experience With Diesel Generators? I have a gas generator purchased many years ago that I am thinking of replacing. This recent outage ( I am out in NJ going on 12 days, POCO says Thanksgiving for sure!!! ) has me thinking a lot. Getting gas is a problem currently, installing NG is a nonstarter, propane would be very expensive to install.
I have a 500 gallon fuel oil tank in the basement that should not be too hard to tap for diesel fuel.
What are the thoughts about a portable diesel generator? Anyone have any experience with diesel generators in general?
As an example something along these lines : »www.amazon.com/Powerland-PDU6500···ompliant or »www.amazon.com/All-Power-America···nerator/ -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

Anything quality for diesel starts at 5k$ new... and it would only be 6-8 kW |

Yea recall that well. I was the proud owner of a 1982 Volvo Diesel. Nice car except for the smoke when going uphill. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to pende_tim A year or more ago contributor to this forum posted several discussions about purchasing two silent Aurora Portable Diesel Generators link here:
The contributor resides in Canada and appeared satisfied.
They purchased the generators from Emergency Power, link here:
At one time Affordable Generator sold a 6000+ KW air cooled generator. Link here:
I do not see the air cooled diesel unit listed, they may either be out of stock or discontinued.
Buffalo Tools also offers a portable diesel generator here:
»buffalotools.com/generators/gensd7.html
A contributor to this forum purchased a propane generator from Buffalo Tools and was satisfied with their purchase.
There have been some general discussions about how long the engines will last in these Air Cooled Diesel Generator. Some less well known suppliers of similar air cooled diesel generators have shipped generators with dead batteries that could not be recharged and have had reported reliability problems. |

PSWired join:2006-03-26 Annapolis, MD | reply to pende_tim I use diesel backup power at home. I have a 290 gallon underground oil tank and an Onan 7.5 kW generator. Like you say, fuel availability is never a problem. Got through 6 days of no utility power earlier this summer.
Any quality diesel generator is going to be expensive. I'd be hesitant to go with a Chinese one.
Are you handy and looking for a project? There are plenty of old diesel generators out there that need some light refurbishing. Take a look at Smokstack.com for ideas and advice. Most of the quality diesels out there will last till the apocalypse. |

 | reply to pende_tim One thing I would also look into is if they can also run on heating oil, I know in the larger 100KW+ sets you can run off diesel or heating oil without any issues and there sold as such, some even let you mix in NG. It is something to look at as you may be able to get heating oil but not diesel when another one of these storms hits. |

PSWired join:2006-03-26 Annapolis, MD | I run mine off heating oil. But I'd check with the manufacturer first if you're planning on buying anything new with a warranty. |

Affordable power has some Detroit Diesel powered generators that were pulls from refrigerated railroad cars. 1200 rpm and "built when america was at its peak."

 | reply to pende_tim I will vouch for »buffalotools.com/generators/gensd7.html
No experience with their brand directly, but their generators are manufactured by Launtop ( »www.Launtop.com ).
I have imported MANY generators from launtop in the past, from gas to diesel. The diesels that I had were rock solid. Even made my own attachment to connect to 55gallon drumps of Veggie oil. No mods to the generator needed. Would start the generator and warm it up on diesel, then toggle it over to Veggie oil. Many MANY hours of run time, very quiet, and handled all the loads very very well. -- »KmanScooters.com Home of Wisconsin's Most Affordable Cars, Motorcycles and Scooters "Yes, I'm a Freemason No, I don't know where the Grail is No, I don't know where the Ark is And don't even ask me about "The Da Vinci Code." |

Diesel is a PITA to mess with, it does not store well, and without weekly maintenance and monthly fuel changes it will not be reliable in the long term. How much cash or credit do you have available to you? I would just get a 10KW Generac and order a 250 or 500 gallon propane tank from a local propane company. » www.generac.com/Residential/Guar···es/10kW/» www.tractorsupply.com/generac-re···-4208359Should not total over $6000. -- CompTIA Network+ Certified |

So the diesel bus we started last week for the first time in 4 years, with 4 year old diesel, that fired right up with nothing more then new batteries put in it did not store well? Weekly maintenance and monthly fuel changes is a severe overstatement. It's simply not true in 99% of cases.
It's all relative. Compared to gasoline, storing diesel is a dream. Propane is certainly easier long-term, but getting ahold of it in an emergency is much harder than diesel. |

fcislerPremium join:2004-06-14 Riverhead, NY | reply to pende_tim that Powerland looks eerily similar to a Tahoe 7000 that I see everywhere.
They are powerful (I have used that Tahoe along with a 9000) but they aren't "clean"
On idle the 9000 would dip to 104 volts and frequency was ~58 to ~62
Under a steady 5000 watt load the voltage was around 120 and frequency seemed to be 60 +/- 1. Hooking a decent APC up to it resulted in the APC switching to battery...
I find most of these non inverter generators to be too "dirty" for my needs. You plug in a fluorescent light and can see the power quality right there. The honda DAVR and IAVR are closest to inverter that I have seen. I do "live sound" and run on generators a good portion of the time....so I see and use many different brands. The only ones I trust are honda/yamaha, and I prefer honda EU. Once you get into larger units they are typically much cleaner. One retailer I work with frequently rents me a MQ DCA40SSKU. Power tolerance there is 60 +/- 0.25 hz
With that said....they should function fine for home usage. Have you looked into something like a Kipor ID6000? It's a diesel inverter. I don't have much experience with the brand...but they are one of the few diesel inverter units I have seen |
