Re: Firefall public beta weekend

I got it figured out. The damn game needed to be patched.

The game patch option only came up when I ran the launcher, not the client application

So has anyone else been playing this still? I played quite a bit this weekend and really enjoyed it. In fact I enjoyed it so much I ponied up for the founder's club. I have some screenies I'll post later tonight (if I remember). I'm still figuring it out but love the gameplay and upgrade trees.

Sweet! I have seen reports in chat that they will not be wiping the beta characters on launch. If so that's a hell of a head start. I'm enjoying the dreadnaught so far although I've barely started progressing.

VioletVenom See Profile, how often do they hand out those beta keys like the one you gave me?

What I've seen in their forums is that they won't be wiping exp. Makes no mention of resources. I would hope anything bought with red beans would be immune to any wipe.

I'm not sure if they give out more invites to founders or not. I've still got a couple left if you were wanting to hand some out.

PM sent. Thanks yo!

So is questing disabled after the Trans Hub missions? You guys just thumping like bosses to gain xp? I think it is, I'm just making sure I'm not part of a beta bug here, Google seems somewhat contradictory on this point.

I have had very little time for Firefall, but when I have had time this is my impression.

What is the WoW affect?

The WoW affect, is that after playing WoW, when you play other games you expect the game to be a certain way, and when it's not, you think the game is bad.

I suffered the WoW affect when I first started playing GW2. But once I got over that hump, now I love GW2 more than I ever loved WoW.

But what's happening now?

Now I am suffering the GW2 affect when I play Firefall. When I play Firefall, the open world feels dead, even though it is pretty. It just feels cold. Why? Because after playing GW2 and it's dynamic vibrant world, Firefall open world feels lack luster!

I need to play Firefall more to make a real determination if I like it or not. But at this point, when I play Firefall, it just makes me itch more to go back to Tyria!

Well, you have to keep in mind that this is an actual beta and not early access to a complete game. I don't think they are releasing for quite a while. Any impressions you make now will need to be subject to change.

Combat in Firefall is TIGHT... just as TIGHT as WoW, which is AWESOME.

The game is supposed to become an eSport, and the tightness would be required for that.

i didn't like GW2 in beta... and if I stayed with that impression I would of never played it.

I'll give Firefall more time to grow on me! it has so much potential!

Questing is quite limited. I got to a point after Trans Hub where it sends you to Sin Towers. It appears broken to me as there is no object to interact with at the quest coordinate. There is actually a lot to do if one stops thinking of the game linearly and more sand box like.

I explored the world for a while, seeing what areas/heights I could get to. Raced from Copa to Sunken Harbor countless times, trying to better my time. Searched for uber thumper sites, my timing always seems bad though. Have yet to find the fat motherload. Chosen tower farming for exp. Never cap the tower, just let the chosen keep respawning and keel'dem. Wash, rinse, repeat. Lately I've been farming in what's been coined exp valley. Sunken Harbor 2 tower area. Last night we had 4 advanced towers going, talk about monster spawn! It was like Dune, " Usul, we have wormsign the likes of which even God has never seen."

I personally quit playing WOW quite a few years ago. I know what you speak of though. I've become very picky with my gaming. Partly maybe because I don't have as much time to devote to it now days. Most games I don't even bother finishing.

While I do consider firefall an MMO, it doesn't fall into the same button mashing genre of WOW for me. I think ff has a lot of potential and hope the games surpasses that.

It just needs more players to fill it up. Once they get more quests in and get the servers full I can see the game becoming much more lively.

The little area they have open for beta is likely to be a fraction of the continent they have in store.

That's great news. I think you can get a pretty good feel for a game like 5-10 minutes in. The gameplay is feel of Firefall feels spot on.

They asked me to fill out a survey. I wish I kept a copy of it because I filled it out honestly.

I enjoyed the game until I found out that:

Thumping is the way to grind and that can get old real fast.
Going from Engineer 1 to Engineer 2 causes you to lose all your old Engineer 1 traits, so you're actually handicapped until you're deep into the Eng2 tree for little benefit.

I would really like some sort of "push the line back" game where an entire zone was invaded, rather than just flying around to certain spots and just clearing shit out, moving on to another, re-capturing shit that you just cleared out, etc.

If I went into a fully bug-infested zone and worked with the community to clear it out, set up a base, clear forward, etc., it would be bad ass.

I uninstalled this awhile back.

I'll try it again down the road after it's been optimized a little better and maybe some video drivers have been released.

It ran terrible in certain areas.

I play it every now and then. The TPS mechanics are pretty solid. Grinding for resources is there in the form of thumping, and as grinding goes it's very fun. You can call down your thumper, a big drill that gathers your minerals, which you can use to craft (which takes a while and you can speed up with microtransactions). The thumper makes a lot of noise (hence the name), which gets the attention of every enemy in the area and brings them running to you, so you have to defend the thumper until it's done. There are also dynamic events in the world but at this stage there are only a few and they repeat. They hadn't gotten very far with missions the last time I played, so thumping and dynamic events were it when you played through the missions they had. There is also PVP and other things I haven't tried yet.

The learning curve is kind of steep because the tutorials are bare bones. Character customization is just ok, there aren't as many options as other games (that could change, idk) and it is also uses microtransactions to get the good stuff.

TLDR: The core gameplay is there and is fun but IMO the game has a ways to go before being ready for release. You could do a lot worse in a F2P game though.

The core game has good potential but right now is run from place to place or do your harvesting thing. I uninstalled it last night will wait until they release more content to get back to it.

Heavy and Engineer are a lot of fun.

It has promise, but not enough content at the moment, and the lack of a fast travel (apart from gliders) is pretty frustrating.

I need to check this out and see if they have optimized the code further. Last time that I tried to play on my laptop (M14x, two years old), I was getting about 4 FPS in many places.
