[Internet] Bell shaping Up speed?I have bell DSL 25Down/7UP. I have a server and laptops in my home that I want to access from work using FTP and HTTP. But whenever I try to download anything from my server/laptop at home from work I only get 80-100 KB/s speed, even though I have 7MB UP at home and 8-10MB DOWN at work. When I upload to home, I get 2-3Mbps which is perfect, but download is the problem.
It seems that Bell is shaping the UP speed for outside accesses somehow. I do get 7MB speed when I do a speed test at home. Is it a known issue with Bell? Why get 7MB UP when you can't use it. |

Looks like the throttle boxes are back. They never fooled me i knew they'd bring them back. |

Bell does not throttle any longer.
First of all, Bell only ever throttled P2P, jaguar is describing non-P2P behavior. Secondly, the throttling window was 4:30pm-2am. Jaguar's issues sound like they're not time sensitive.
Lastly, i'll refer to the following quote " I do get 7MB speed when I do a speed test at home."
Is it possible, the bottleneck is at work?? |

from my perspective, Bell has no interest in throttling upload speed. It is highly in excess on their network and should not cause any congestion.
When I had 25/7 I had slow upload speed sometimes with some weird protocols, I couldn't explain it either. DCC & Skype file transfers were both slow.
Try different apps... |

You may want to review this in this forum from back then, and also some of the reviews where this was also the case, back then. In addition, when Bell Canada had their own forum over at bell.ca, this very thing was discovered to be happening as well. So no, Bell did not *only* throttle p2p. Entire lines and non p2p services were indeed throttled. |

It could be your server software too. Some ftp servers seemed to have upload speeds capped in the software.
I use FreeNAS's built in ftp server for my home file server and I have no issues downloading via ftp from my home server at full speed - from outside my home network.
However I used a couple of other windows based ftp servers that were less than stellar in terms of performance. |

I've used synology server with FTP at home and also FileZilla server on my laptop. Both with same results. Instead of work internet I also tried other ISPs with same result. I have checked speed limits and they are not turned on anywhere. Synology engineers logged into my server and pointed fingers on the ISP. Everything is wired and on the local LAN there is no speed issue. |

your work may have cap ftp/or high volume connection to a low number.... very common practice.
find a good friend who can reach max speed at home and ask him/her to download the same thing.
also look at multithread... |

also look at multithread... Already mentioned that work internet is ruled out. Have tried other places and ISPs with upto 40Mbps down/up. |

I have 25/10 and never have trouble downloading from my home. In fact I just did this about 20 mins ago, downloaded ~200MB at 10mbit from my home.
206887060 bytes transferred in 171 seconds (1.15M/s)
I haven't seen any throttling. |

I also have the same slow uploading issues on my Fibe 15/10 connection. On the Bell speed test, my upload speed is 10.53Mbs. However I've tried downloading a test file from my home server and the download starts off around 1Mbs but quickly drops down to around 350Kbs. |

Think its time for me to harass the Bell technical support. |

My dad has 15/10 and I have never had any problem getting the full 10mbps when downloading from the server I have on his LAN.
I did have problems initially but they went away after I allowed ICMP on the firewall. My guess is that PPPoE and its 1492 MTU is the culprit, if you filter ICMP and by extension pathMTU discovery (which is ICMP) then your traffic is getting horribly fragmented on the return path since the 2 end points won't know about the lower mtu of the dsl connection.

I just looked through the settings on the Sagemcon 2864 modem but can't find anywhere where it would let me unblock external ICMP filtering. Is there somewhere to do that from the menu? |

no idea, I installed an linksys e4200 running tomato shibby to do the pppoe and the sagecom is simply a modem |

May be this is the solution, not to use sagemcom for what it is intended to be. I'll try to use it as a bridge and see what happens. |

Don't know, seems i'm easily hitting uploads of +300kb/s on torrents... but I have utorrent encryption enforced. |
