The battery is likely failing. At 5 years it's not at all unexpected. The alternator may be feeding enough current to make up for the consumption at higher-than-idle speed, but once it dips a bit the battery can't hold.
I bet that if you test the acid you'll see it having lower than normal density in at least 1 cell.

Ruin - no.
Warning - maybe yes, maybe no. You may find the car harder and harder to start or one day it may not crank at all. YMMV.
