Re: [MLB] Reported--Blue Jays take on some serious payroll

I think Melky has learned his lesson, if not, he's the biggest idiot on the planet.

No need for contracts though, he gets caught, it's a year suspension, and the team isn't legally obligated to pay, in fact, it legally obligated NOT to pay.

Oh really? Heh, i've been to the Dome but never on the field... How the hell did you do that?

A couple of years ago I rented the place out for a few days. They let you do pretty much everything, except I couldnt open the roof. Considering we had speakers hanging from the roof, that was probably a good idea to leave it alone.

I believe they use standard stuff now, though I could be wrong. Would have been changed for 2011 season.

So when's your next concert tour anyway? That last one was great. Loved your versions of "Honky Tonk Women" and "Moon River."

Melky finalized as well. Looks like they got their manager as well. John Gibbons.

Nothing has worked out in Toronto in almost 20 years.

Jim Tracy walked away from his Rockies job. Not usually a good sign. I had to sigh when some suggested Bobby Cox. Yes, he was a great manager, but he too walked away.

Gibbons wants to be in Toronto.

True story -- EDIT: Took out my words from what I remembered and decided to post what exactly happened (thank-you google for verifying my story!):

quote:
Here’s John Gibbons in one backroom anecdote.

It’s the start of the ’08 season.

We’re sitting around jawing in the visiting manager’s office at old Yankee Stadium. Gibbons’ time as manager is growing short. He knows it. We know it. But we’re all trying to pretend this isn’t the beginning of the end.

We start talking about something we’ve all seen in the New York Times that morning — an attempt by a mathematician and baseball fan to metricize the performance of big-league managers.

“How’d I do?” Gibbons asks.

“You were sixth,” someone says.

A smile begins hauling up the sides of Gibbons’ face like sails being raised on a longship. A comic beat passes.

“In the American League East,” someone else says.

The smile collapses. The room quiets, turning uncertainly to the guy who delivered the zinger. Then Gibbons bends forward in his chair and begins to laugh. He is rocking back and forth, delighted. No one appreciates a John Gibbons joke more than John Gibbons.

(It should be noted that he was sixth. In all of baseball.)
I never thought of that at the time, yes, only 5 teams in AL East, so 6th place ranking was impossible!

It's Gibbons, Jeff, not Gibson.

But in any case... I think I read somewhere that during the press conference John Gibbons displayed more charisma and personality than John Ferrell did in 2 years... That I must agree 100% with, Farrell was like a statue, no emotion at all...

Jim Tracy walked away because Rockies brass is stripping all kinds of power away from the manager, and it's one of the least desirable jobs in baseball right now. Bobby Cox walked away because he just wanted to move on after frickin 20 years on the same job. Neither are exactly bad reflections on the person.

Bobby Cox is also 71 years old... Other names being suggested were Joe Torre, who's also over 70...

The age is not taking away from managerial capability of course, but some of those guys just want to retire at some point you know, spend time with their families after decades in baseball...

Gibby is 50 they said, so he's plenty fresh...

Meant to say that Bobby walked away from Toronto, after 1985 for Atlanta.

He went from being a manager in Toronto to GM of the Braves. Cant blame a guy for taking a big fat promotion. Eventually he took over managing them himself after 4 years as GM and they put Schuerholz in the GM spot. Bobby Cox was the one who drafted Chipper Jones.

Atlanta only ever won one championship, and by extension so did Chipper Jones & Bobby Cox with the Braves...

Sure they did have all those pennants and division titles... but could never get over the hump but that one time...

The AL East is going to be crazy next year, every single team a contender.

I read this great article yesterday about the changing landscape of baseball this season. Can't wait for opening day 2013.
