Re: [MLB] Reported--Blue Jays take on some serious payroll I think Melky has learned his lesson, if not, he's the biggest idiot on the planet.
No need for contracts though, he gets caught, it's a year suspension, and the team isn't legally obligated to pay, in fact, it legally obligated NOT to pay. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

1 edit | reply to Jackarino Jim Tracy walked away from his Rockies job. Not usually a good sign. I had to sigh when some suggested Bobby Cox. Yes, he was a great manager, but he too walked away.
Gibbons wants to be in Toronto.
True story -- EDIT: Took out my words from what I remembered and decided to post what exactly happened (thank-you google for verifying my story!):
quote: Heres John Gibbons in one backroom anecdote.
Its the start of the 08 season.
Were sitting around jawing in the visiting managers office at old Yankee Stadium. Gibbons time as manager is growing short. He knows it. We know it. But were all trying to pretend this isnt the beginning of the end.
We start talking about something weve all seen in the New York Times that morning an attempt by a mathematician and baseball fan to metricize the performance of big-league managers.
Howd I do? Gibbons asks.
You were sixth, someone says.
A smile begins hauling up the sides of Gibbons face like sails being raised on a longship. A comic beat passes.
In the American League East, someone else says.
The smile collapses. The room quiets, turning uncertainly to the guy who delivered the zinger. Then Gibbons bends forward in his chair and begins to laugh. He is rocking back and forth, delighted. No one appreciates a John Gibbons joke more than John Gibbons.
(It should be noted that he was sixth. In all of baseball.)
I never thought of that at the time, yes, only 5 teams in AL East, so 6th place ranking was impossible! -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| It's Gibbons, Jeff, not Gibson.
But in any case... I think I read somewhere that during the press conference John Gibbons displayed more charisma and personality than John Ferrell did in 2 years... That I must agree 100% with, Farrell was like a statue, no emotion at all... |

Jim Tracy walked away because Rockies brass is stripping all kinds of power away from the manager, and it's one of the least desirable jobs in baseball right now. Bobby Cox walked away because he just wanted to move on after frickin 20 years on the same job. Neither are exactly bad reflections on the person. -- You're so vain... | Bobby Cox is also 71 years old... Other names being suggested were Joe Torre, who's also over 70...
The age is not taking away from managerial capability of course, but some of those guys just want to retire at some point you know, spend time with their families after decades in baseball...
Gibby is 50 they said, so he's plenty fresh... --

He went from being a manager in Toronto to GM of the Braves. Cant blame a guy for taking a big fat promotion. Eventually he took over managing them himself after 4 years as GM and they put Schuerholz in the GM spot. Bobby Cox was the one who drafted Chipper Jones. -- You're so vain...
