Re: Time Warner - replacement modem better speeds - Los Angeles?

A DOCSIS 3 modem won't improve your speeds if you're already getting what you are supposed to get. In other words, if you're paying for 10 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up, and you're getting those speeds, replacing your modem won't do anything.

However, if you have trouble with your speeds slowing down at certain times of the day, a DOCSIS 3 modem may help. This is due to channel bonding, which could reduce congestion in some situations (downstream only for now in most TWC markets). In addition, it will support faster speeds when/if you decide to upgrade. So if you're buying a new modem, it makes sense to consider buying a DOCSIS 3 modem.

Possible downside: If your area still has Powerboost, it will not function on a DOCSIS 3 modem. Your service will still work, but without the initial boost in speeds.

Thanks that boost thing is certainly something to think about as I don't know if I have that or not. I can't explain why my friend gets much better speeds on Charter than he should with docsys 3.0 but he does 25x8.

I'm still curious if anyone here has switched from the default modem to their own modem purchased from other sources than TW.

A lot of people are using their own modem, especially now that TWC is charging a rental fee.

Replacing a modem with a DOCSIS 3 modem could boost speed in the following scenarios:
•Being on a plan that needs a DOCSIS 3 modem, but only having a DOCSIS 2 modem
•Incorrect provisioning by the cable company
•Problem with the original modem (unlikely)
•Network congestion issues that are less prevalent when channel bonding is used

In powerboost areas, with a D3 modem, would you be more likely to maintain your speed package such as 15/.768 or would the D3 modem not be able to mask a slowdown like a D2 ones can bc it can access powerboost.

You will get whatever speed you pay for. So if you're paying for a plan that has 15 Mbps down, your speed tests will be very close to that. So far, it seems like speeds are more consistent, but some of this is also due to upgrades on TWC's network.

Not so on the Insight/RR branded network. I know we have, and that I am on a D3 CMTS, but even a year into TWC buying us, they haven't changed speed packages here. Seriously Insight is vastly incompetent in their management of the network in this city, no wonder TWC finally bought us.
