| Google Voice just verified my Montreal cellphone number! I just made this post in Canadian Chat but thought that it might be of interest here too.
I don't know where the 'Verizon' reference came from because I use Koodo.

| Seems like GV is somehow mistaking your Canadian cell phone number for a U.S. (Verizon) number.
I wonder how extensive this allowance is - how many Canadian numbers can be verified. Can anyone test other Canadian numbers to see if GV will verify them?
Had you ever unsuccessfully attempted to verify this Montreal number with GV previously or was this the first time you attempted it?
Another issue is how long GV will allow this. Even if they stop it, they'll usually allow anyone who already verified a Canadian number to keep it. |

 | reply to RobThompson Inspired by your success I gave it a try... and failed. However I did get further than ever before in that I was at least able to enter Canadian numbers and get to the point where Google verifies the number but received the message "We could not verify your phone. Please try again." Fortunately it doesn't really matter to me these days since I use a Callcentric free NY number. -- DPC3825 (bridged mode) - WRT610N + Tomato - Panasonic KX-TGP500 - Asterisk 1.8.11.0 with Asterisk GUI on Virtual Server Anveo - FreePhoneLine - Voxbeam - Numbergroup - Callcentric - VoIP.MS - Localphone - UKDDI |

I had a Canadian Gmail account to which I added a Google Voice account by using HotSpotShield.
My Google Voice account would allow me to enter my Canadian cell number but would not verify it.
I downloaded the 'Google Voice' app from here: »play.google.com/store/apps/detai···glevoice
During the install process I entered my Canadian Gmail/Google Voice account & PW. At some point the install displays the phone numbers that you have on the GV account - my cell phone number *did not* appear. On that same page, there is an option to 'Add this phone'. I selected that option and the install finished.
I logged back into my GV account and my Canadian cell number was now VERIFIED.
I tried a call and Google Voice placed it directly from my cell phone - no 'callback' as the 'Voice+' app does.
I just dialed my Google Voice number from my home phone and my cell phone rang!
HTH.

Verizon had a large investment with Telus until 2004, and perhaps may still provide them with some services.
As well, Verizon Canada is an active company and provides a range of services, to other companies.... |

 | reply to RobThompson This definitely works. I think the key step is to "Add this number" from the Google Voice app on an android phone. BTW, GV did not identify the provider with the number I tried, but it is still verified. The Android app uses a different verification method (text message instead of call back), which might be why it works. The iPhone app does not work. |
