So, I'm just going to call you out on some of the nonsense in this thread. Blizzard can offer a software authenticator for free because it's all digital and runs on your own hardware.

The actual authenticator is a physical piece of hardware that has to be manufactured and then tagged/configured. It also needs shipped as well. That costs real world money.

I'd replace it before it dies, from what I read, it sounds like a hassle to get it removed from the account, so you can add a new one.

Also false. If you keep your account information up to date, removing an authenticator is actually fairly simple. When my wife lost her keys, she lost her authenticator. You remove the authenticator and then type in a code that is sent to your cell phone via SMS.

Just have access to your cell phone and your e-mail and the removal process is about 2-3 minutes (including wait time for e-mail/SMS delivery). You can then immediately download an authenticator for your phone and hook it up to your account without issue.

WHen i look at the score board i can typically see me in the top 3-5 then the next horde make an appearance somewhere after 10th in terms of damage, hk and KBs. WTH happened. I thought with hellscream we'd be a little more aggressive.

On topic:
I bought an authenticator for D3 (dreams of making millions on the RMAH had me wanting to double up on security measures). The two times id' taken a hiatus from WOW when i came back my account was hacked.

Not this time though. The authenticator works. If you can afford 15 bucks a month you can afford 6.40 for a lifetime....

Hmm, you can use the Ipod touch, Ipad, Nexus 7, Not sure about the Kindle or Nook, or if even any WOW apps are available in those stores.. No cellular plan required. Just need the wifi access.
But io know Armory works well on my Ipad and Nexus7 and my kids Ipod touches. So I would think the software authenticator would as well.

Actually this isn't even true since having an authenticator attached to your account is completely optional. It wasn't until recently when I wanted to transfer my guild master toon from one server to another that I've ever had a need for an authenticator. I suppose this is one possible risk with having the authenticator on your phone rather than the physical device. When I was having trouble with the BB authenticator, I wasn't able to "authenticate" my account so wasn't able to login. This happened a couple of different times. It wasn't any big deal though because I'd just have the authenticator removed from my account (which can be done as long as you are setup with SMS). I'd verify it was me that wanted the authenticator removed by entering in the code they would text me. Now if your phone was completely fubar and not able to receive texts... well then you'd be stuck.

Since you can only use one authenticator per account, those with multiple accounts that want them all protected will need multiple keyfobs (and hopefully they were smart enough to label them) or multiple smartphones or some combination thereof.

Also there is an apple version of the app isn't there? Any recent ipod can use that app so it's not even a question of having a smartphone to use the free version. On the same token, a tablet running Android or iOS (and maybe even Blackberry) should be able to use the app as well so there's even more options for you.

Regarding the battery in the keyfob, that's a good point. The keyfob my GF has is starting to die (getting harder to see the screen, and doesn't always respond when the button is pushed). She has had it for about 4-5 years now, which is about all I would expect out of it. Fortunately we just upgraded phones and she now has an Android phone so she just installed the app and swapped authenticators. Maybe I'll take it apart, replace the battery and try to add it to an account I seldom use and see what happens.

That would likely reset the clock (at best) in it rendering all of its codes invalid, or if the programing is stored in ram instead of rom then it could lose the programing.

If you want to test it I'd suggest first remove it from your account
next replace the battery
then re-add it

as you have to provide 2 codes and the serial I'd hope that the new codes would tell bnet the time in the auth effectively.

I don't view that as a valid objection--if you already own the hardware, you get the software for free. Or you can purchase a standalone key fob for about two week's worth of subscription time.

I think that is what the complaint is about.
Though I think $6.40 maybe just enough to cover the cost of the authenticator, though I'm not sure. If there is any profit in that price, it might be a very low one.
$6.40 for a one time hit, isn't going to break the bank either. If anything, you give up a fast food meal. No biggie.

In the end, my opinion is, just another attempt at a cash grab by a group of lawyers that found "upset" customers willing to go ahead with the possibility of getting a few pennies. While the lawyers rake in the dough.
