Google Maps coming back to iOS?

It looks like we’re inching closer to a Google Maps app for iOS 6. Google has started to let people outside the company test a maps app that works on iOS, though it has not yet been submitted to Apple’s App Store, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

This version of Google Maps for iOS is set to be a bit different than the version that Apple stopped including as a default application on the phone this fall: The new version Google is testing “is expected to contain turn-by-turn navigation,” according to one of the Journal‘s unnamed sources.

If this happens I think Apple may as well give up on a map app. Several others already have great map apps with turn by turn.

Not trying to start another map apps war btw. I think that one has been beat to death.

However, given that a potential Google Maps app would be replicating Apple Map's function, Apple might no allow it onto the App Store.

Honestly, I've just not had good luck with Google Maps. I was trying to compare a location a few days ago and Apple maps was right on and Google's maps were off by a few blocks.

I know others have experienced differently, but it's been fairly consistent for me.

Haha ! You don't think that it was Apple who went back to Google and asked/begged for this ? Why would Google invest development efforts if they weren't assured it would be a go ?

That shit should be challenged in court... Just because Apple has a built in function, that it can't be made better by another company...

And clearly the Apple Maps are inferior...

Challenged in court ? Apple can pick and choose what apps they will allow in their store with no legal repercussions.

Thing is if Apple tried that they'd be blown out of the water so quickly, not even an iYacht could save them.

To wit:

Apple provides a weather app on the iPhone but allows several other (and far better) weather apps on the phone as well (I've never used the Apple weather app)

If they were to suddenly turn around and block Google maps claiming that it brought them harm while continuing to offer competing apps for other Apple provided apps?

Cue the Apple sauce

It would be nice to have both options available, just like Siri vs. Google Voice Search. Each has some merit.

I believe that will be the case; I don't think the intention is to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps...

the internet firestorm would be so strong Apple would have no choice but to allow Google Maps. The bad PR from blog posts and other media would not be something Apple could stop because its impossible to stop bad PR with your legal department.

Although users will effectively replace Apple's version...

Google Maps turn by turn sucks on Android too. It's often off and misses turns and God forbid it throws you off course with no cell signal. Then it can't reroute. It's useful for planning, but there are much better turn by turn navigation apps for Android. IPhone users keep complaining their gmaps sucks in comparison like ours is great. If ours(Android users) is really great in comparison, then that is very rough and you should thank Apple for replacing it. Seriously!

A fool thinks they know everything.

A wise person knows enough to know they couldn't possibly know everything.

There are zealots for every OS, like every religion. They do not represent the majority of users for either.
