Guspaz posted : No more than it would destroy the SSD if it was the actual storage device that all writes were going to. The cache drives I've got in there are Intel 80GB G2 SSDs (there was a super duper cheap sale on them, they were like $30 or 40?), good for something like ~800TB of writes, so they should last a long time on a file server that doesn't have a lot of churn (it's storing media files and such, not a lot of deleting going on). And if it starts getting near the end of it's lifespan, I can always just remove the drive.
--
Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org

Guspaz posted : It's a mass storage file server with a big fat RAID array with a ton of RAM (24GB) and multiple SSD caches (one for ZIL, one for L2ARC), so there isn't any performance improvement from 7200RPM (might have slightly higher IOPS if the SSD caches don't get it, but the GigE port is the bottleneck). As a result, all that 7200RPM gets me is more noise and more power without any benefit.

I live in a 366 sqft one-room apartment, with that server maybe 15 feet from my bed with nothing in between to block the noise. So how loud the drives are is pretty important to me.

EDIT: I'm not sure 7200RPM drives actually have any real use anymore. SSDs have come way down in cost (Crucial has a 960GB model for $600 MSRP now), and 5400 RPM is better suited for mass storage (you don't care about performance if you're using HDDs instead of SSDs)
--
Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org

Guspaz posted : They top out at about 1 terabit per square inch with PMR, theoretically, after that they move to HAMR, which has been demonstrated already at 1 terabit per square inch. So that's around where the transition point is. Current 1TB/platter drives are somewhere between 566-625 Gbit/sqin depending on the surface area of the platter.

Traditionally, we can fit up to 5 platters in a standard 3.5" drive, meaning current areal densities can support 5TB drives. HGST, however, announced that their new Helium-filled drives will sport 7 platters, which would mean 7TB drives. Once we max out the current-generation technology (perpendicular), it seems like we'll be somewhere around 11-12TB before the current recording technology is maximized. I don't expect them to go that far, though, because there will come a point where it will be REALLY hard to maximize the current technology, and increasingly easier to just jump to HAMR.
--
Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org
