Bathroom sink: broken pivot rod

The pivot rod for the sink stopper has broken, so that part of the rod is still in the drain and through the plastic hole at the bottom of the stopper. Not sure how to get it out, none of it is sticking out of the hole where it enters the drain. And since it is through the stopper, I can't pull that all the way out. I did take the top of the stopper off, so I have a little access down the drain.

Any suggestions?

Take the drain apart and see if you can remove the broken part of the rod. Not sure how easy it will be to get a replacement rod.

Or just get a new tailpiece and install it. They are not all that expensive.

Replace the tail. It's some $15.

It's a brass tailpiece, I'll have to look into how to swap that out. I haven't done that repair before.

I just replaced a tail piece at my dad's house this past weekend. Fairly easy. The big box stores carry replacement tailpiece kits as inexpensive as $7 (plastic) that include stopper and rods too. They also carry just the rod that goes into the ball/socket connection, which sounds like all you need.

If you need to remove the tail piece, it consists of two parts. The round flange that rests in at the bottom of the sink into which the tail piece screws into. They sandwhich the sink between those two pieces. You put plumbers putty or silicone beneath the round flange when you replace it.

The hole where the rod goes through the stopper is usually offset on the stopper, so you can turn the stopper in the sink and it will come off of the rod. It usually works best by pushing the rod down behind the sink which raises the stopper up, then grab it and turn it to slip it off of the rod.

Also, the pivot rod is usually held by a pressure nut on the back side, which you can remove to pull out the old rod and put in a new one. It has a round ball that is used to seal the connection. If you tighten the pressure nut too tight, it will be hard to open and close the stopper. Too loose and the stopper won't stay down when you want it to.

With today's tailpieces and stoppers (at least the ones I have installed), putting the rod through the hole at the end of the stopper is really only needed if you are trying to prevent someone (like kids) from removing it from the sink. Otherwise, if you just drop it in the tube, it still works fine when you push/pull the rod to raise or lower it. Gravity holds in place to hold water. At least that is my experience.

My problem is that part of the rod is broken off inside the drain and can't be easily removed. I will try to turn the stopper and see if I can get it off of the rod that way. If I can do that I can then probably get the piece of broken rod out of there.

An example of a tailpiece
Is your tailpiece similar to this one? If so, you should be able to unscrew the nut indicated by the arrow to be able to pull the rod straight out. Or am I still not understanding what "broken off inside" is meaning.

How did the rod break off? If it was due to corrosion, I'd fix that problem before I fixed the rod.

It is like that; the end of the rod inside the hole broke off from the rest of the rod and is not accessible. I'm going to try and get the stopper out by turning it as suggested above, if I can do that I should be able to get something down to the rod part to push it out.

Again, a small part of the rod broke off.
