there was a story about this recently here too...they work 1-2 hours during morning rush hour, and the same during the 4-6pm window as well...making about $200 for 3-4 hours work a day, tax free and cash...of course, almost all of them are also on social assistance (of some sort) and many will have plenty of benefits provided that most of us don't have or have to pay for...while panhandling on the islands of busy intersections is illegal here, it still happens and they simply take off when they see a cop, only to return a few minutes later...the same people can be seen at the same times on pretty much every day.

Yup! Our mortgage, property tax, hydro, gas and water costs the same each month as many people in St. Catharines pay just to rent an apartment with no utilities, and even St. Cats is cheap compared to the GTA (I think, now, they're similar to Hamilton as far as costs go). It makes a massive difference. We're very blessed to have the income with jobs so close to home in a town with such a low cost of living. A lot of people in this town do struggle, but it's a struggle that would be infinitely harder if the cost of living wasn't as low as it is.

My wife and I are both well above minimum wage with a household income just shy of six figures. The difference, of course, is that one can buy a house here for 250K that would cost over 600 in Mississauga, which goes back to my entire point about wages meaning nothing and cost of living meaning everything.

Personally i don't think so, in a normal world, the price should have been 99c and given "free" market forces, it might have. I've found in the past the moment the press starts reporting about cheap gas the price skyrockets.

In this particular case, my gut feeling is those that control the pricing said no way, and have colluded to keep high prices.

Every day the last week or two the prices have been doing this - just pick a random number between $1.239 and $1.339 and that's the day's gas price.

listed as 13mpg city, 17mpg Hwy (both US mpg numbers) -- and that's about exactly what I saw - city 12-13mpg, mixed driving about 14-15mpg, and highway 15-16mpg... 100L didn't get me very far.

Yup that's quite the difference. The Silverado was about 14 - 16 mpg (US). A little quick math says that's around 19 - 20 L/ 100km -- which is just about what I always saw - and that would be conservative highway driving. City driving was 12-13mpg. I'm now around 8.5L/100km - each day's drive being 250km, I'm literally saving almost 30L/day (probably about 28L) - at $1.30/L that's almost $40/day - times 20 days of driving to work each month - almost $800. That adds up fast.

What's funny is they now advertise the new 2013 Silverados as getting closer to 35MPG (IMP) or 30MPG (US) which would pretty much be the same economy as I get now - but I just don't quite buy it - I'm sure I'd see at least 10L/100 - if not 11L/100... still a vast improvement over what I got in an '02.
