Re: Router Replacement?

Yes, for best results you should consider getting a 5 ghz router ( Verizon doesn't have one )

So on G/N the non overlapping channels are 1, 5 and 9?

No, the non-overlapping channels are 1, 6 and 11.

Channel 5 overlaps channel 6 and channel 9 overlaps channel 11.

As guppy_fish See Profile said, your best bet is to get an N router and set it to use the 5Ghz band only. You'll find less congestion in the 5Ghz band.

1, 6, and 11 is what I thought and tested. I have a nice Asus RT-16 running Tomato (not hooked up) but it isn't 5Ghz either.

I have multiroom DVR and didn't think any of the multi router options made a lot of sense for me. I guess either I will have to do that or just live with 30/25 on wireless. Which is really ok.

I have a Netgear WNDR3400 at work I could try (it is 5Ghz).

Thanks again everyone.

Hey jcondon8, see my post here: »Wireless speed is half that of Wired.
I had the same issue with my 50/25 sevice. On wireless, I only got about 25/15. I solved the problem by not using the Actiontec AP.

Thanks I was reading your posts over there too. I might try my ASUS RT-N16 over the weekend and see if it works better.

Got a Rev I router in the mail today. Just setting it up now. Will see if it's an improvement.

Had to call in because the internet light stayed amber. Does that happen a lot?

I would assume that was because you didn't release the DHCP on the old router before installing the new one.

The CSR simply broke the lease for you, or it would have expired on its own after two hours.

Well I did some testing tonight and came up with some great but weird results.

I hooked up my Asus RT-N16 router. I disabled the DHCP server on it and assigned it a static IP.

On the Actiontech router I disabled the wireless radio and plugged an ethernet cable between them (lan port to lan port).

Got some what better results on channels 1 and 11. I accidentally set it to 5 (meant to click on 6). And got mid 40s by mid 20s.

I then set it to narrow channel (20Mhz instead of 40). 53+ / 27+

Then I saw I was on channel 5 and not 6. Set it to 6 and it was back to the crappy speeds.

Back to 5 and it is about as fast as when wired.

I still might try a 5Mhz router over the weekend. I wonder if being between channels and being only 20Mhz helps it find a spot with a bit less interference or something.

One more test and 55.73 / 29.68.

So far, so good. My new rev I has firmware 40.19.22 . Is that current?

Yes, 40.19.22 is the current version for the Rev I.

CORRECTION: Someone in another thread reported that he has 40.19.36. See »Actiontec MI424WR FIOS N Router REV. I

I don't know how you get the upgrade.

I brought home a 5Ghz router from work to test.

Turns out my 1+ year old laptop's crappy Intel 1000bgn adapter is only 2.4Ghz.

The router is a Netgear N600 wndr 3400. Seemed to have slightly less latency then my ASUS RT-16. But the Asus RT-N16 was slightly faster in both download and upload.

The Netgear worked ok on channels 1 and 6.

The only 802.11G 5Ghz device I had is my smart phone. It was much faster on the 5Ghz band then it is on the 2.4Ghz.

So I am back on my Netgear and happy.
