Re: Win XP Startup screen wrong...

Thanks to all.

OK, all restarts take me to the same single user sign in.

CAD once or twice (or 20 times) - pressed during the Starting Windows screen, or after the log on box appears does not do anything.

Logging off while holding the Shift key still brought me back to the same single user sign in.

Using F8, I tried Last Known Good - got to the same....

I can get into Safe Mode - but only as that same user. If I try to change Users in Control Panel, I still cannot. I can only access the same user.

BUT... I think I found the problem. The user wanted to change the User name. I am not sure how she did it, but she did. So.... the computer wants to boot to "Yvette" but she changed the name to "Olivia" (the details aren't important). The computer boots to Yvette, but if I go into the Users control it says the name is Olivia. It doesn't seen to jive... Not sure how this messes up things, but that may be the answer...

OK, I don't have the file I need, but there is a command line that I might be able to use to put Yvette into the Admin Group. What is that command?

Found it:

net localgroup administrators Yvette /add

??

System Level 5 error has occurred. Access denied.

Safe Mode does not seem to help. I am in Safe Mode only as a Limited User. I still cannot edit User Profiles or change WinLogon in the registry. I have to get on as an Admin - but I am not given that choice!!!!

Indeed. It wouldn't be particularly secure if a non-admin could turn themselves into an admin.

Agreed! Just trying to find some way out of this mess! Likely needs a reinstall....

Ugh, the Recovery Console just gets me to a C:\ prompt!! Not real helpful in this situation....

Have you tried going to a command prompt and:

runas /user:localmachinename\administrator regedit

It should allow you to run regedit as the Administrator user with full privileges.

(You could also run cmd this way .. I'd probably try launching rstrui.exe to do a system restore with %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe)
