Insects in basement, ID?

Click for full size

Lately I've been finding a lot of these insects in the basement.

Does anyone know what they are and where they might come from?

When I find them, they are usually dead or dying somewhere in the middle of the floor/carpet. I've never seen them alive, it's almost like they come out of hiding when they start dying.

To give some dimensions to the pictures, these insects are just under 1/2" in length.

IIRC, they are known as 'pill bugs', as they roll up in a ball when messed with as a defense.

pill-bugs, rollypoly's etc. are all the same thing.

You've got em because your basement is damp and has exposed damp wood that they can get to. (They don't eat the wood, they eat the stuff eating the wood.)

Like many other insects, when the conditions are right. . .

I had 2 or 3 years when these pill bugs infested my utility room. I literally swept them up.

They went away, and I had forgotten about them until your post.

This year is the mass infestation of stink bugs. And they are everywhere-office, home, car, etc.

The Wikipedia article states:
"Despite being crustaceans like lobsters or crabs, woodlice are said to have an unpleasant taste similar to "strong urine"

Every 4 year old in the warmer climes further south knows what those are.
