n_w95482 posted : GDDR5 has built-in error-correction capabilities (although not ECC itself), so usually you see performance start to decline before outright instability when you overclock the memory too far.

Definitely try leaving the memory at stock speeds. It's always a good idea to test each portion of the device individually when overclocking. I start with the GPU or CPU first, then move on to the respective memory for whatever I'm overclocking.
--
KI6RIT

me1212 posted : I haven;t done anything to my motherboard, and when I set my gpu to factory defaults its solid as a rock. I just got done playing the game that was giving me trouble, about an hour latter no issues to be had.

Just a thought, could it be unstable vram and not the gpu speed? Even occt only lets me test 2000MB of vram, this game with all the mods I have will use over 2.25GB vram. Could it be the game is pushing my vram harder than the stress tests since its using more, and finding weaknesses that the tests and my other games that uses less vram can't? I think I may try just leaving the vram at stock and then ocing the gpu core. But not today, got stuff to do, maybe not even this week what with thanksgiving and work and homework and all.

If all else fails I'm gonna try what you suggested with the drivers(maybe even the latest beta drivers) and a clean boot, possibly even a clean install of the game.

norwegian posted : First I'd try resetting all hardware to factory defaults, graphics card, motherboard etc. Then see if it is repeated.

What of uninstalling drivers and then only installing the drivers without the control panel? You will need to do a search for all ATI drivers in system32 and deleting them and a good system clean/registry clean and reboot before loading the graphics drivers.

Another one that I've suggested elsewhere is the clean boot and testing your game then:
»support.microsoft.com/kb/331796
--
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke

me1212 posted : That did it. I'm gonna turn the voltage control off for now though. I don't need any more speed right now so I may as well leave well enough alone.
me1212 posted : Found my most stable OC at stock voltages, 1020mhz /1570mhz. Not too bad, according to reviews and benches i've seen its roughly equal to a stock 670.

Got MSI AB so I could tweak the voltages and get 1050-1100mhz, no dice. Voltage control was locked for me. Not sure if something they are putting on the new cards or something in the latest AB.

Oh well, the extra 30-80mhz probably wouldn't have made 5fps difference anyway at speeds this high. For the price I paid I'm okay with it.

Haven't tried games yet, probably gonna try metro2033. I think all the mods I have on skyrim messed something up, time for a fresh install of that.

me1212 posted : Got a 7950 today, so far I love it. I tried to OC it, but, when gaming the best I can get it on stock voltage is 1025mhz on gpu and 1575mhz memor, not bad admittedly. The thing is when Im running benchmarks(kombustor and Heaven DX11 Benchmark 3.0) I can get 1075 mhz gpu and 1575 memory on stock voltages. When I try to play stuff like skyrim and metro2033 above 1025mhz it freezes and eventually in the bottom right corner of the screen it says driver stopped responding.

Is it like a driver thing or is it just not enough voltage? I'm using the latest 12.10 amd catalyst control center/drivers, downloaded them just a few hours ago. I know amd has had problems with drivers in the past, so I'm not sure if that would effect this.

I'd like to get more out of my gpu if possible, but I'm only at 1.090v right now I'd rather not take it past 1.130 at most just to stay of the safe side. And Does anyone have any recommendations of software to use to OC? I'm using the CCC right now but it doesn't have any voltage control, so can't overvolt with it. I've used msi in the past but have heard some negative things about it and the 7950 from a few people.

EDIT: I've been googleing and it seems that the new BIOS that amd is using on their boost edition of their 7950 overvolts to 1.25V and OCs to only 925mhz, when under load. Does that mean that less than up to 1.25v is safe for all of the 7950? AMD may not be the best company ever, but I don't think they'd purposely fry their gpus.
