[Speed] Looking for more knowledge about issue

Hello Everyone!

I have had suddenlink for years. I actually think they are one of the better companies out there. Even with my current issues I am still pleased. They have recently released there 50 and 107 meg services in my area. I upgraded to the 50, but I can never pull over 30 (I was at 30). We originally thought this was an provisioning issue. However, when provisioned at 50 I get my 3 up and when provisioned at 107 I get my 5 up, but neither speed goes about 25-30 megs average. I have been in contact with a supervisor who has been very helpful. I now even have a dedicated line from the tap directly to my modem, no barrels, no splitters. Nothing. I am going to post my signal information. If anyone can help me with this please do. I am very pleased with suddenlink but I would love to upgrade to the 107 megs. I game heavily on the weekends when I am offline and my nephews wear netflix out. So I would love to have the extra bandwidth!

Here is all the information from the modem. IP addressed omitted.

Also, I would take a recommendation for a good new modem. I am considering purchasing my own modem so I no longer have to rent the 3.0 modem I currently have. Thanks!

Thinking about this modem:

That modem has been replaced by the SB6121. Target had the SB6121 on sale for $69.99, but I'm not sure of the sale is still going on.

One word....Infrastructure. I don't believe that SL can provide those speeds to our area as of yet, yes they advertise, and you might get those speeds at 5:30AM, but not consistantly.

But with gaming, bandwidth isn't the number to look at, latency is. Yes, Netflix likes bandwidth, but at 30Mbps, you should be able to run 4-5 device on HD without a major problem.

I do know the infrastructure in my area can actually handle the 107. There is not enough people on my node to make a difference. Although I can't figure out the fluctuations. I still would like to have the 107. When you have a person using netflix and another browsing the internet and two gaming consoles going you can use a little extra bandwidth.

In my area (Nitro, WV, not too far from you) SL had trouble providing me with 10Mbps (sometimes falling to significantly less than 1Mbps) just a few months ago, so I wouldn't be so sure that they are up to snuff yet.

For your third traceroute, Marshall does block traceroute in and out from their network. A better test (it doesn't block traceroute or ping) would be Marshall's VPN server, muvpn.marshall.edu.

Just thought I'd offer this up for you. It helps me test my latency from my AT&T connection, since I always test first and then if the latency is good I connect to the VPN server to mask my traffic a lot.

Sadly I have to say from what I have seen and in my experience suddenlink can not provide the 107Mbps service in Wva.
I live in Parkersburg and have had a tech to my house. I now have a direct line from the poll to my modem, and do not get close to the 107Mbps.
Tech said issue is on there end and issue has to be fixed at the plants.

I also feel your and others pain, as the 107 speed here is only available, and just like mentioned earlier, for a very limited time frame around 5:30am, also echo the other comments made above about the situation, as I received the same technical advice and information from an experienced tech during a tech visit several weeks ago, as he was told there was a glitch in the system, then he very politely apologized that he could not even run a test on the line, as his testing equipment needed updated to support testing the new 107, also did not even have an Arris modem on his truck to swap out and check for a possible modem issue and finally indicated that they don't know when, or even if it would be fixed.,

Speeds avg. 35 to 50 most of the time, but slows down from 8pm to 1am into the 20's.

I was going to downgrade to 50, but had stuck it out even thinking and hoping for some improvements made by SL, but after you just indicated what is happening with your 50, then all appears to be pretty futile even there with that speed and maybe for any speed satisfaction of any type in this area.

No one is going to mention the fact that he pinged 1.5 seconds to his router?

Please...I would certainly appreciate "any mention" that anybody might have about these results and specs for this "107 speed" plan that resulted.....just after 1 AM.

I am going to swap the router. It is only about 30 days old, as that was one of the ideas to try to resolve the issue. Good call. I will let everyone know if that helps. I am going to pull the router and test to straight through the modem and post the results around 1 am tonight since that is when longgone has his results as well. Maybe we can some things figured out this way. Also, my aunts husband has been working in the cable industry for 30+ years and he said he was going to get this issue fixed for me. I will see them tomorrow for thanksgiving and will discuss everything mentioned here! I would love to see a reply from suddenlink corporate on this thread. An official response would be amazing. Just let up know what is up and if we need to downgrade to 50 megs or even 30 megs till the issue is resolved. I have been extremely happy with suddenlink up till the 107 upgrade. All I need to know is the truth! I respect that more than the speed. Thanks!

Swapped router. Problem persists. I also bought the Motorola SB6121. So that will save me $120 a year. Even with both investments problem persists. May downgrade to 10 megs since I never pull more than 7.

You show 32 megs in the speedtest directly above you... bit more than 7 megs.

but your ping looks find for the most part, would probably suggest that your node is too loaded for 107 continuous

Could also suggest MAYBE check your return path, could be a bit low but ok still.

Hey moldypickle, is there a way I can check my return path? If so please tell me. I know for a fact that I have always had issues (for years) with the returns here. They come and go.

Here are some new results for you to look over:

You'll need a tech to check your return path from the headend.

Are you able to add a splitter or anything that will reduce your downstream power a bit? It's marginally high.

But past that I would really say that it seems to be a capacity issue in your area. About all you can do from the user end

A tech will be here today.

This is at 5:40am to Ashburn, VA.

This is to Chicago.

This is to Nashville, TN.

So now. Since my connection speed still is unable to pull anything about 30megs on a Sunday Morning at 5:40AM, does anyone else here still believe this is not a node issue. I think there is something broken somewhere and it is time to fix it.

By the way, I am going to keep posting here for record of my issues.

If your node is full, you can't really "fix" it save adding more capacity. If the tech finds something wrong, be sure to come back and share with us. If he tells you that there are no problems though, you may think about getting ahold of people higher up, or just dropping down to the 30 meg package for awhile.

Kind sucks, but if nothing is out of whack, there's literally nothing that can be done. Getting the ok to add capacity takes forever and a half.

Ongoing, called again. I am going to keep calling until they fix it. FTC or something like that is my next option. I know how bad frontier DSL sucks, but I am seriously considering because suddenlink advertised something they can not provide and are not willing to fix for us customers who want to pay for a service.

They have to Friday then I am out. Will keep posting here till then. I will switch just because I can. I really will, and when I do they will lose everything including the phone, the two DVR with two expanded tiers and the 107 internet. I will only keep el cheapo basic cable. This isn't a threat but a promise and I told the tech politely that I know it was not her fault. I am never mean or rude, I am just businesslike about it and to the point.

I too had the 107mb but you have to realize that unless your latency is extremely low (like less than 10ms) then a silly speedtest site will likely never show 107mb.

My personal experience is that the speedtests would average 60mb with rare 80mb results. However, when I performed real file transfers I was able to hit 107mb consistently.

You actually can't get them on advertising. All services through SL are marketed as "UP TO" xxx speed on a best effort basis. Damn near all residential providers are set up like that.

Besides, if you are threatening to cut cable and go w/ dsl........ why not just cut your package down to 15 or 30 meg speeds and save the money. Your speed tests clearly show your line capable to 15 megs. I'd also put money on the fact that SL at 15 megs will beat what speed you can get from dsl.

Hello lawnman20066. Your node looks good and is averaging less than 25% utilized with brief spikes to 35% and is not remotely close to being "full".

I ran some ping-tests from our edge router in Ashburn, VA back to your modem and saw no packet-loss with an average of 21ms which leads me to believe that the RF plant/Node are working fine. I attempted to ping your equipment but it looks like your router started blocking my pings after the first 50 replies. However, I was able to ping it at 1500 bytes with DF (do not fragment) set which is a good thing, at least to your router.

Please connect your computer directly to the cable modem via an Ethernet cable and rerun the tests to the Suddenlink speedtest server. Be sure to try different browsers (Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Chrome) as they can have drastically different results. A better test would be to find some high throughput servers to download from. Stacking up large-file downloads is preferred over speedtests. Presuming you're running a Windows OS, you can look at your network utilization with the task manager, networking tab.

You may also want to run the Speedguide.net TCP Analyzer (»www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php) to ensure your computer is optimized for broadband connections. There is also an Optimizer there that you can run and if you do, be sure to drag the slider all the way to 100mb. (use this tool at your own risk)

If none of that helps, try a different computer directly to the modem and go through the steps again. You mentioned that you contacted tech support but did they ever send a tech out with a laptop to test with directly off of the modem? If so, what were his results?

Hello again Lawnman20066.
I really Appreciate all your tenacious efforts, especially since I have the 107, and unfortunately having about the very same issues and results. Nice to see some SL techs in here lend you hand, but I've seen the gradual slowdowns in prime-time begin well over a year ago with the 20, then even more significant degradation seen at the time with that previous customer free bandwidth upgrade, but is now really more noticeable with this 107. I have tried about everything on my end, and then some, that has been suggested in here by techs and some very helpful persons in this forum and site, like changing hardware, equipment, OS, and software as last suggested in part by the SL Tech on-board.

If everything checks OK at the user end, and as reported in your case by the Tech on here....that your Node is far from overloaded with about 25% capacity, then what can any experienced tech or anyone else suggest or mention as the next nearly obvious probable cause?

Lawnman...here are some recent and very similar results.

Only two probable causes:

1) Their infrastructure can not handle 107 connections. Therefore they are guilty of false advertising and we both need to report the entire non-sense to the FTC.

or

2) Something is broken somewhere so Suddenlink is lying to both of us because they do not want to spend the money to fix it.

Either way, both is B.S....

Also, how did you figure out which account was mine? Am I the only person in the area at 107? That would be my guess.

Oh yeah, forgot my nightly logs:

Edit: Ah, I just noticed you posted the modem log showing the modem's MAC address, which is another direct link to your account info.
