I needed the adapter because the 3-prong extension cord would not plug in to the tail end of another 2-wire light string.
This brings up another issue. I don't think you are supposed to plug anything but anther string of lights into a light string.

They give people a false sense of security, which is far more dangerous than a 2 prong plug used properly.
If someone refers to herself / himself as a "guru", they probably aren't.
