I needed the adapter because the 3-prong extension cord would not plug in to the tail end of another 2-wire light string.

This brings up another issue. I don't think you are supposed to plug anything but anther string of lights into a light string.

No more dangerous than the two prong sockets that are in place already. (as long as you don't plug anything in that is expecting the ground to be connected)

They give people a false sense of security, which is far more dangerous than a 2 prong plug used properly.
