As far as seeing what wireless signals are near you, passmark.com has WirelessMon software where you can see the signal strength, channel and other info. It's not free but has a 30 day free trial. I found all routers in my neighborhood were on either channel 6 or 11 (seems to be a default). I switched to channel 1 and my wireless performance was a little better.
