Sagemcom F@st 1704 with Netgear N750 Router Settings

I was having issues with wifi coverage and wifi speeds with Windstreams router Sagecom F@st 1704. So after researching routers, I decided to purchase a Netgear N750 (WNDR4000). Due to its speed and wide coverage. After following all the setup instructions and connecting some devices I noticed that the coverage is the same as what I had already and the speeds were actually slower than what I had before. I am sure its operator error. I am not that Tech savvy as I wish I should be.
Now my question: What settings, if any, need to be changed in the windstream router and the netgear router to make the Netgear router fast and cover more area? I have disabled wireless settings in the windstream router. I have 12 mbps service (supposed to anyways). Thanks for any and all help as I want a great wireless service.

If you have wireless N devices only, then use a pure wireless N setting on the Netgear. Mixed networks can only run as fast as the oldest device, such as wireless B or G.

Be sure you have the latest firmware for the Netgear installed.

Go into the wireless settings, and change the "Mode" to the highest available for both the 2.4 GHz network and the 5 GHz network.

From the manual for your router: "Up to 150 Mbps is the default and allows 802.11n and 802.11g wireless devices to join the network. G & B supports up to 54 Mbps. Up to 65 Mbps supports up to 65 Mbps."

If you want more detail, go to pages 30 and 31 of the WNDR4000 manual: »www.downloads.netgear.co ··· ar11.pdf
