Re: Patch day: OMG why so long? I hope they fix the glitch that causes those of us with Radeon GPUs to have hard lock-ups for no reason at all (happens in Halls of Lightning, Valley of Four Winds, Spirit Kings raid fight, Will of the Emperor fight, etc.). -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

 | I've never had such a glitch. |

Interesting, I haven't been in HoL in a couple of years but I'm in Valley almost every day and haven't noticed this. I'm running a 6850. I have had occasions where the driver will reset for no apparent reason, killing aero for a little bit until it recovers but it did this with a GTS 450 as well and never hard locked anything. |

I have the 7850, great card low power consumption. Typically choose Nvidia, but it all depends on your price point and what card's best in that range. |

Right now AMD spanks Nvidia in the low to low/mid market and has better dual-card (Crossfire/SLI) scaling efficiency, but Nvidia has more powerful single card solutions and (IMO) better drivers (this time). -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

Snuffboxir nice irlPremium join:2011-04-15 Milwaukee, WI kudos:4 | I'm a little bit oldschool. AMD (ATI) blew Nvidia away initially, and then fell off the wagon for several years. Only recently have they been consistent competition.
said by Krisnatharok:Right now AMD spanks Nvidia in the low to low/mid market I don't agree, Nvidia owns large portions of the mid, and even low markets:
Tom's Hardware: "The GeForce GTX 650 Ti is the best $155 card out there.... no other card in the $150 range can touch it."
said by Krisnatharok:and has better dual-card (Crossfire/SLI) scaling efficiency I agree with this. But SLI/Cross is for bragging rights and 3dmark benchmarks - not pratical, and still not fully supported accross games (making it often a waste).
said by Krisnatharok:but Nvidia has more powerful single card solutions and (IMO) better drivers (this time). Completely agree with the drivers. AMD's made some recent improvements however. |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:7 | AMD has been more even with Nvidia on the GPU front than it has been with Intel and CPUs. I'm glad to see the robust back-and-forth.
Here's Tom's current (Oct) "Best GPUs for the Money":
Best Card under $110: Radeon 6670 ($60), Radeon 7750 ($95)
Best Card $115-160: Radeon 7770 ($120), GTX 560 SE ($130) [LOL wtf???], GTX 650 Ti ($140)
Best Card $165-210: Radeon 7850 ($170), Radeon 7850 2GB ($180)
Best Card $220-360: Radeon 7870 ($230)
Best High-end Card: GeForce 670 ($360), Radeon 7970 ($390), GTX 690 ($1000) [another LOL, AMD doesn't have a 7990 out yet but vendors are delivering their own 7970 X2's]
A GTX 690 for $1000 or two 7970s for under $800? That's an easy choice.

JoelC707Premium join:2002-07-09 West Point, GA kudos:5 | reply to Snuffbox While we are discussing a game here, I would like to point out there are cases where nvidia can't even TOUCH an AMD card. Take OpenCL computing for example, AMD has a significant lead in that area over nvidia. Of course, since AMD cards can't be used in CUDA applications I can't make that comparison. It's possible nvidia in a CUDA app with AMD in an OpenCL app, they will run on par with one another but there you're comparing apples to oranges most likely. In short, AMD vs Nvidia depends on the intended use IMO. |

As you said, ATI (AMD) in the GPU market is recently competitive. Again, I own a 7850. But AMD has a weak grasp and for whatever reason seem to fall to the ground randomly. Not a company I put a whole lot of continued faith in.
Intel/Nvidia I trust more from a overall reliable product standpoint.
I hope AMD can do better with their CPU's - competition is good for us consumers. |
