 | IA Century Link Faster Speeds? I just got centruy link and the fastest I can get is 3mb. I was told 7mb when I signed up but turns out only 3mb. I am in Davenport Iowa and it looks like they are running fiber about 10 blocks away or less. Is there a way to tell if I'll eventually be able to get higher speeds? I have a 30 day trial and if I'm stuck on 3mb I'll probably get rid of it. |

LFHC join:2012-11-04 Collinsville, VA | Well If you are able to get 3mbps chances are the DSLAM you are on is already fiber fed because most of the time if it is fed by t1 lines which are copper running from a DSLAM that is fiber fed you can only get 1.5mbps if you could post your line stats from your modem that will help. However if they are running fiber it is possible you will be able to get faster speeds I cant tell you anything for sure because I dont know all the information of that build. It sounds like to me though you might not have good enough line stats to obtain a speed faster than 3mbps |

 | reply to GrandMstrBud Does this help?
Levels Downstream Upstream SNR 25.4 dB 21.0 dB Attenuation 47.5 dB 29.0 dB Power 19.4 dBm 12.6 dBm |

LFHC join:2012-11-04 Collinsville, VA | Your downstream attenuation is high just based on that I think that is why you can't get a faster speed you could try to connect the modem to the NID outside and check the numbers again to see if your inside wiring could be a problem. |

 | I'm getting a constant 3mb I just want to buy higher speeds and if it's not going to be available anytime soon I may as well cancel. I get faster speeds with a cellular connection. |

If it is possible try to talk to a tech if you see one where the fiber is being ran he could be able to tell you if they are doing speed upgrades. Based on the downstream attenuation a estimate your line is probably capable of about 6mbps and you have to factor in overhead. So 3 Mbps might be all you can get if the line stats can't get any better you could also try to get a tech out to look at the line and see if there are any damages or bridge taps |

 | I did when I called and asked why I was not getting 7mb when I was told I would and they then said the highest was 3mb. Kind of disappointing really. They said they didn't have any of that information. I'm not sure how or what it would take to get a real answer from them. I seem to get a different story every time. |

 | reply to LFHC In the former Q territory, before they decided to run fiber, they had bumped up the speeds to the following: 1.5, 3, 5 or 7 Mbps. Where I live, I had 3 & the other side of the street was able to get 5.
When they did upgrade to fiber, I was able to get faster then 3 Mbps.

 | reply to GrandMstrBud Earlier this year a friend was able to upgrade from 1.5 to 12 and the location is about a mile south of me. I believe it was 12 could be 7 not sure off hand. |

 | reply to GrandMstrBud I think the speeds they offered in most areas were 1.5 and then the next tier was a 3-5 mbps tier, after that i believe it goes to 7 just FYI |

| reply to GrandMstrBud I don't think you can sync at 7M with 47.5 dB attenuation. I have a connection which will sync at ~5900 with 51.5 dB attenuation. Your attenuation would probably be good enough for 6M, maybe 6.5M. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

 | Well I seriously hope they finish with the fiber run. I see they are now about 3 blocks away last week with the century link trucks and I'm guessing the company they contract out to run the fiber. I really don't think I can deal with this 3mb download. |

Here's mine for comparison for ya. I'm about 1400' from a Fiber CO though.

Utterly solid connection for like years. Hell, I've even had the same IP for about a year. --

 | reply to GrandMstrBud I noticed my modem is now at 5120 download and checked online and I can now order 7mb. I'd rather have higher of course but maybe it's a sign of fiber getting close I don't know. I think I'll call to get them increased. Here are my current modem stats.
Levels Downstream Upstream SNR 16.6 dB 14.0 dB Attenuation 47.0 dB 29.0 dB Power 19.7 dBm 12.7 dBm |

djweis join:2006-04-02 West Des Moines, IA | If you're getting 3 and 5 meg it's CO fed and you're at the distance limits for higher speeds. Unless they put a remote in your area you're probably not going to improve. |
|
 | I'm not sure what the "remote" is I'm not familiar with DSL technology. I know they have been working about 3 blocks from me at some large looking power box but it was Century Link techs there for a few days. It jumped up to 6144 I believe after the 5 and online it had the option for 7 then went back to 5. |

| "Remote" means that your dsl service comes from a remote terminal instead of the central office (CO). Since dsl speeds are limited by the distance from their source (remote terminal or central office), having that source closer to you, i.e. remote terminal, will allow you to get higher speeds.
Typically the new remote terminals are "fed" by fiber optic lines so dsl downloads speeds of 40 or 20 are possible if you are close enough to the remote terminal.
Simplest thing to do is ask one of the CL workers what they are installing and when it will be or if it is already working. |
|
 | I thought about stopping and just asking but didn't really want to bother them. Believe me I was real tempted. |
|
 | reply to GrandMstrBud Well now I'm up to 7mb according to my modem and speedtests verify it or it gets over 6. Modem levels are as follows and no upgrade in speeds on the website.
Levels Downstream Upstream SNR 10.3 dB 15.0 dB Attenuation 46.5 dB 28.5 dB Power 20.1 dBm 12.6 dBm |
