Former champion boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho was seriously wounded Tuesday in a shooting outside the Puerto Rican capital, and doctors and his spokesman said he was expected to survive.
The doctor said the boxer, who was trailed by drug and alcohol problems during a career that included some high-profile bouts, was at risk of paralysis from the shooting.
The fighter's last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by unanimous decision. Camacho has fought other high-profile bouts in his career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending what was that former champ's final comeback attempt.
Camacho has a career record of 79-5-3, with his most recent fight coming in 2009. 2 edits | reply to Linklist He had a unique career. The man boxed 30 years professionally. That alone should have made him a drooling idiot from three decades of blows to the head but he did OK.
He was recognized early on as a talented fighter with both good boxing skills and heavy hands. He especially was successful early in his career with his power. However, discovered two things: One to dish it out with power to someone you had to take it in order to dish it out. He realized he didn't like getting hit. So he significantly altered his style to be more a boxer counter puncher for the rest of his career.
One of my favorite fighters and one of the best of all time, Sugar Ray Leonard chose to fight Camacho when he was way, way over his hill and had not fought a very long time. He obviously forgot that Camacho the boxer used to be Camacho the puncher.
It was the only Leonard fight from the time he won his first championship to the end of his career that I refused to watch as I knew that Camacho would know that Leonard wasn't a threat and that Camacho could take it to him with immunity and that's just what happened. Camacho gave Leonard not only one of the few losses in his career but the worse beating--the only real physical beating he got. |

Translation: With a nickname like Macho and the ability to promote himself, people paid big bucks expecting to see a tough SOB in the ring. Instead, they got a runner. He was good at getting attention but not so exciting inside the ring. |

| reply to ZZZZZZZ I was looking at the stats in Puerto Rico and they do have a much larger crime rate for a small island nation. But I think the big thing here is that Camacho had his demons and a drug problem and he got caught up in it and he suffered the consequences. They found 10 bags of coke in the car. Either a drug deal gone bad or he ticked someone off in that circle and he paid for that with his life. He had spent most of his money. He didn't and couldn't own a multi million dollar mansion in the United States with his boxing winnings. Spent most of it on drugs, booze and women. |
