Well anyway

Fire stat priorities

Intellect
Hit till cap 15%
Haste till achievable soft cap, for now 12.50% when raid buffed (comes to about 7.14 I think pre-raid buffed)

Crit
Haste
Mastery

after the soft haste cap haste and mastery are about even so its down to play style and actually game play, which makes haste better than mastery.

also us mages get mana regen from haste so IMO movement and regen set haste above mastery.

Agreed with Dark, only thing fire mages can disagree on is the haste soft cap. Some fire mages feel crit is soooooo important. it is more valuable than the soft haste cap. IMHO i roll with the cap for now, knowing as gear escalates. the haste soft cap will be easy to reach.

If I had the talents infront of me I'd post my opinions on them next, but here are some that stand out.

1. Scotch, great anytime moving cast so you don't have to wait on a cd or anything and can still cast something 100% of the time.

2. Ice barrier, lessens the strain on the healers and helps you live longer.

3. cold snap, allows more use of Ice Block and its 30% heal, can be cast while Ice blocked so it can help save you.

4. Incanter's Ward, easier to make use of among the options and with the boss AOE that most seem to have this xpak uptime should even out to make it best. (RoP is good too but can cause issues with movement heavy fights, invocation isn't practical IMO in that you have to stop and channel for so long)

And based on Cata we likely won't be able to get to the 2nd haste soft cap till the 3rd tier, IIRC its about 37.50%, and in DS gear it was simply planned to get the set bonus to help get there.

and outside of hero the 3rd extra tick isn't going to happen.

Jobbie tbh i hate playing frost. We have 3 mages. 2 are fire and 1 is frost. All i know is procs rule the day for frost. Pet freeze = 2 FoF. Ice orb proc FoF like a billion times. Glyph for Icelance for the 40% more dammage to an extra enemy. A true frost mage should comment. I do not care at all for this spec. Even though it seems to be tops in mages right now.

What I know about frost is.

Its my OS
I use it for times when I need to tank some adds (IE spider in FL, Nef in BWD)

I also use it for times when the mobs are immune to fire, IE MC, and TK 1st boss.

I like the pet and want a fire ele, but shamen stole it.

Also I've been told Frost has always been good for leveling, I don't know as I leveled as fire in wrath days.

And was annoyed when I hit lvl10 as a mage because the class description said we had familiars, and we don't unless frost.

I will respectfully disagree on incanters ward being a preferred talent over invocation for fire.

there is no way of determining that you are going to absorb the full amount to get the increase in sp, where as even with channeling for 5 secs or so you get 25% increase for a full 40 secs, even RoP would be prefferable on stand and pew pew fights

The awesomeness of the mage class cannot be doubted. Their potential is through the roof.

I made the fateful decision back in wrath to choose shaman over mage or warrior.. /sigh

I know but I have limited time so I'll stick to gearing my 90.

Ignore my shaman QQ. Old habits die hard.

ya it varies with fight

Movement heavy fights are not so good for RoP or Invocation

but not moving fights RoP is better

I've tried out all three talents extensively, and Invocation is the better choice more often than not. Remember the channel is shortened by haste, so it's not as bad as it seems. The trick is knowing when NOT to start a channel because of upcoming movement/mechanics.
