The only free ones I'm aware of are self-signed, meaning you get tools to let you generate your own cert. But that means the recipients with whom you want to exchange e-mail will need to manually import your self-signed cert so they can not get a warning.

I use a free Comodo email cert with Outlook 2010. Works well for my usage. When it expires you simply renew it. Its free for personal use....
How much checking do they do to ensure you are who you say you are? When my certs expire, how would I renew it? Will Comodo send me an email about the steps on how to renew it? Or will I have to go to their site and then renew it from there. I did not see a renewal section on their page. Please provide the direct link if possible.
