Re: Need a Good Free Digital Certificate for S/MIME

You can get free certificates from

but if you want your (real) name in them you have to personally meet a few "assurers" to prove your identity.

Is this any good from Comodo?

I will use this one for now for testing purposes.

And also, what happens if this free certificate expires?
Will I have to pay for a new one?

Please explain what would happen if this certificate expires. Whats the process for Comodo? Do I have to start paying for a new one after this free one expires?

Also looks good. I checked the details. Its SHA1 with RSA 2048.
RSA-2048 seems adequate enough.

I use a free Comodo email cert with Outlook 2010. Works well for my usage. When it expires you simply renew it. Its free for personal use....

How much checking do they do to ensure you are who you say you are? Otherwise you may as well just generate your own cert.

I just use it for "show and tell" only....:)
And to learn on how to insert S/MIME messages and all that stuff as well.
