EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | Server Network Interface Randomly "Locks Up" Well in relation to a post I recently made about our QuickBooks Server and the remote computers connecting, I did resolve that I had to edit the host file on the remote computers as it randomly wasn't resolving the name.
Any who another issue I've been having is after a few days you'll no longer be able to remote desktop into the system or connect to its network shares. I have to reboot the system to fix the issue. So it seems to me for some reason the network adapter is "locking up" randomly. It's a Windows 7 X64 Pro.

 | Re: Server Network Interface Randomly "Locks Up" Do you have physical access to the server? If you do, that would help a lot. Can you ping the server when it is acting up? |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA 1 edit | I do when I'm on site (Not today). Once I loose access I cannot ping the server. The server has a static IP assigned via the IP Adapters preferences. |

 | reply to Edrick When you are unable to access it remotely, can you still access the network if you log onto the server onsite? |
|
 | reply to Edrick What is the Network Connection status when the box "locks up?"
Any entries in the System log when it happens?
What's the NIC LED status when it happens?
I'd also check if the NIC has the latest drivers applied. They're pretty dum-dum things but I've seen and run into some really weird stuff that was fixed with a driver update.

I'll have to take a look into it further when I'm there. Figured I'd post up to see if anyone's had this experience before. I just looked through the System Logs and everything seems to be operating as normal until the 15th lots of log activity. Then boom nothing until I rebooted the server on the 20th. Nothing odd in the logs from what I can see.
The only thing I see is when I brought the system back up and it says the shutdown was not expected and that's because the powerbutton on the server was pressed to reboot it once it became unresponsive and they didn't have a console to connect to it.
I'll have to see whats up by directly connecting but from looking at the logs nothing happens since the system locked up until it was rebooted. -- Edrick Smith Independent Film & Broadcast Producer »edricksmith.com |

 | reply to Edrick i see that your DNS points to openDNS. why not point DNS (for all network devices) to 192.168.0.1 (i assume this device can handle DNS for you) and setup openDNS on the 192.168.0.1 device?
that is how i setup all the networks i manage that use openDNS.
have you tried the second nic on the unit (from the pictures i see, it has two)? |

Wily_OnePremium join:2002-11-24 San Jose, CA | reply to Edrick What model NIC(s) are in the server? Likewise what is your network configuration? Are you on a real network with managed switches and routers, or is this a consumer-level broadband setup? The former would give you detailed information about packet activity and interface status.
Since you're saying the whole machine is locking up, requiring a hard power cycle, then I don't think it's the network interface that is locking up - sounds like the whole machine is. Unfortunately none of those Event Log screens you posted show anything relevant since you're not highlighting any of importance. |

 | reply to Edrick If there's a 3 or 4 day lull in the log entries then it sounds like more than the NIC is locking up. |

EdrickI aspire to tell the story of a lifetimePremium join:2004-09-11 Woburn, MA | Yeah I'll have to dig into it more, I didn't notice the logs until I posted them that day. I assumed since it stopped responding to network requests that it was the network but since it's the complete system it seems I'll have to dig more. |
