What is the Network Connection status when the box "locks up?"
Any entries in the System log when it happens?
What's the NIC LED status when it happens?
I'd also check if the NIC has the latest drivers applied. They're pretty dum-dum things but I've seen and run into some really weird stuff that was fixed with a driver update.
