[ML] Does a remote mounted disk consume data?

I was wondering in an Internet BTMM mounted volume consumes data while mounted or only when you are browsing it? Reason I am wondering is if the remote volume is restarted or lost, I get the message that the volume no longer exists and I figure this can only happen if it is consuming data occasionally checking to see if the volume is still present.

It must send some sort of "keep alive" signal to the remote server so the port doesn't get closed.
