Boy, grandfather die after falling through ice
A nine-year-old boy and his 64-year-old grandfather have died after falling through the ice while skating on a private lake in Quebec's Eastern Townships.
Quebec provincial police said the incident happened on Friday at around 4:45 p.m. ET on a private lake just off Hébert road, in Ascot Corner.
The two were skating on thin ice when it collapsed, and the boy fell into the freezing water. The man tried to rescue him, but slipped into the lake, which is about two metres deep. Why on earth would someone think the ice is thick enough after perhaps a week of weather around, not far below, the freezing mark? | reply to Kardinal I went and looked up the weather for that area and it's been hovering around 0 during the day, before anybody checks. |

Perhaps a manifestation of this? |

Regardless of relationship perhaps parents should be aware of all plans regarding their kids.

The week was also not that cold... In fact, i do not believe we had enough cold weather to try and go on the ice...
I am sad for the lost but the adult should have know better... |

14-yr-old boy fell through ice near Innes & Trim Roads. Paramedics say he swam out & is in stable condition in hospital. #cbcott #ottnews
(this location is in the far east end of the city) It's been cold enough to form and keep ice for perhaps 72 hours. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |

KardinalDei Gratia ReginaPremium join:2001-02-04 N of 49th | reply to Kardinal I don't have a problem with natural ice, but common sense about what could be weight bearing and what probably isn't seems to be lacking so far this fall.
Here is a picture of where this latest one happened. It seems that common sense isn't common. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |

I do know how many accident they had but Ste-Anne de la Pérade has an ice village (for ice fishing) since 1930... Our average daytime winter temperature in the dead of January in the Niagara Region is 0C. It is above freezing in December, February and March. Down here in this part of Canada, going on the ice for *anything* during the winter is a very unwise thing to do. It is simply not cold enough for a layer of ice thick enough to support the weight of a person to form, and even if it does the very next day it could be warm enough for you to fall right through it.
I would imagine that up in Quebec things are considerably different as far as winter temperatures go. |

| Yeah, *ususally* we get good, thick ice. But not in November. And I would never trust it until Jan (depending on the season). Last year was tricky, too warm, the ice was constantly thawing/freezing, making it untrustworthy (to me) I had never seen such a crazy cycle. It was the first in many, many years I didn't go out on the ice. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

The grandparents lived in the same area AFAIK so that they made this mistake about the ice was surprising.
