 | [Home Networking] Can't get router to connect to internet eMac, PowerPC, Mac OS 10.4.11 Prestige 645M modem Netgear N600 wireless router
We lost our DSL connection 2 days ago. When it came back, my D-Link DI-604 router would not connect my computer to the internet. If I plugged the modem directly to the computer, I could get the internet, but then I lost my Airport base WiFi.
I thought the router had gone, so I bought a Netgear N600 router. It has WiFi, so that would eliminate the need for the Airport.
I followed the step-by-step instructions from Netgear, & was able to create the wireless network. But, my computer couldn't access the internet, & the indicator light for my computer connection on the router remained orange (should have been green).
All of my wireless devices recognize the wireless network, but can't get the internet.
I bought a new Netgear DSL modem, but couldn't get it to connect to the internet. I've gone back to the Prestige, so I can at least access the internet via computer.
I am connecting via PPPoE, & one of the steps the Netgear router walked me through was turning PPPoE off. Since reconnecting directly to the modem, I've gone back to PPPoE.
Either my computer's not compatible with the modem, or there's a setting I'm missing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

| You need you put the Zyxel 645M or Netgear DSL modem into bridged mode (RFC 1483) and then setup the N600 router to do PPPoE.
You'll need to get a telnet client for your MAC to bridge the 645M, instructions are as follows,
1. Telnet to 192.168.1.1 2. You will then be prompted for a password. Enter "1234" You will now be in the modems main menu. 3. Main Menu. Select Option 1, then choose ROUTE IP=NO and BRIDGE=YES. (Use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the spacebar to change the values) Move cursor to "Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel:" Press enter to save. 4. Main Menu. Select option 4 and change the "Encapsulation" to "RFC 1483". 5. Main Menu. Select Option 11, then option 1. Choose ROUTE=NO and BRIDGE=YES. (Use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the spacebar to change the values) Move cursor to "Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel:" Press enter to save. 6. Be sure to hit Enter and not Esc after you make your changes! 7. Main Menu. Select Option 99 (exit)
For the Netgear DSL modem, you should be able to do it inside the web-based configuration, post the model number if you're unsure on how to do it. |

 | I've tried both Firefox & Safari, & neither will open that address. I'm entering this in the address field:
»192.168.1.1
Is that right? |

Is that right? That should be the right address, but it won't work with a web browser, you need to download a Telnet client for your MAC to bridge the Zyxel.
If you're using the D-Link modem though, that address (or 192.168.0.1) should work in a web browser. If you don't know how to bridge the D-Link modem, just post the model number. |
