anon posted : You may want to check this too. One of the other av forums I was checking said that a connection from the cable box via hdmi through the television and then optical out from the tv to the surround sound would automatically downgrade the signal to 2.0 because of some international copyright convention the studios imposed to prevent piracy. I haven't even tried it because they all said the if the optical audio is linked directly from the box to the home theater it will solve the problem.

rabeatz posted : Did you check the settings for a "Devices" menu where you choose what type of digital audio it outputs?
anon posted : I'm kind of disappointed this box won't output 5.1 through hdmi, as the manual indicates. I also tried the Cisco and scientific Atlanta boxes from brighthouse and they were all sending 2.0 no matter what the setting. With the optical audio out cable (and the digital coax on the s.a.) I get what sounds like surround sound, but my home theater only tells you on the video screen what the source is when using hdmi, so I can't verify that it is 5.1. Using the same optical input and a home theater set up disc, I can verify sounds from all 5.1 speakers, but I wish there was a cable show that would do it too so I could sleep again!

rabeatz posted : FX usually has 5.1 content, so try FXHD. Or you could try loading one of the movies on the FX On Demand which are usually 5.1 as well. In my area that's channel 1501. I use them as my go to source for testing it when I set up my receiver.

On my box (a Cisco Box), Once I'm in the Brighthouse settings menu there's an option called Devices that opens a separate menu. In that menu I have options for changing the digital output type. If you have that option select Dolby Digital from there and hit exit and try again. I could be wrong but if you have that option and you select it you should be able to output the Dolby Digital through HDMI. Remember to try it on something with Dolby audio - FX on demand's movies work great.

I'm not familiar with the Samsung box but the Scientific Atlanta boxes I've had default to outputting 2.0 and I've had to change that setting to enable it.

anon posted : I have the Samsung 3272 hd dvr and a new Sony home theater connected via hdmi and optical audio to the box, and also hdmi out to an older sxrd Sony hd tv. The tv is also connected to the box directly with component rgb cables. I can't get any of these combinations to output better than Dolby digital 2.0 sound. Is this box capable of 5.1? It's driving me nuts!
