When TV Guide goes away

Some markets have lost it already while others will drop off by 4/12

The onscreen tv guide for off air tv programing for TVs that support it are losing the service soon
From what I have read, some cable companies are losing it too

I found an app that helps
It is advertised for only iphone but works on my iPad
The app is ok but I prefer the web version much more

Where did you read this exactly? Most if not all cable/satellite providers purchase their guide info and make it available via set-top boxes. Or are you referring to the PSIP data that comes with most unencrypted digital cable channels?

Another good website is zap2it.com and, of course, there's always tvguide.com (which also has an app.)

As far as iOS apps go, I prefer TV Forecast (HD) which lets me know when the next episode of my favorite show is coming up. I rarely want or even need a full TV guide.

Another app along these lines is AOL TV. And I'm sure there are many many more...

Are you talking about the actual channel you put on that scrolls through a TV Guide? IE not the Interactive Guide?

If so I haven't seen that channel in years.

The guide on my Sony Tv began displaying a warning a few weeks ago

Interesting. However, it's extremely unlikely that this will affect cable/satellite DVRs or PVRs that use other sources for guide data (Rovi is not the only provider, and in fact, I'd guess they were doing it so cheaply, they can no longer afford to do it).

Another good read, especially the comments:

When I was a kid, I sold TV guide subscriptions door-to-door. sigh

I believe I can change the source of guide information for the DVR software I use. Not good to see some people may have a problem with this but there is likely a way around it.

From the information available at present it seems that only devices that uses TVGOS data that is inserted by the broadcaster is affected. Newer devices that is internet capable and has a TVGOS client that can pull data from the internet shouldn't be affected by the shutdown.

Ugh, so my TV that's connected directly via coax to my OTA antenna (without a DVR) won't get program information anymore? This is actually the first I've heard of this, so thanks for the heads-up.

Edit: As decx See Profile notes, this might not apply if the TV gets that data over the Internet. I just have a feeling it doesn't in my case. I'm gonna look that up.

I have Comcast service, and use their website's version of it. It presents the schedule by zip code. I would expect Time Warner, Charter and others do the same.

I'm sure there are other services out there for OTA users

Yes, there are. They've even already been mentioned in this thread...

seems like it was only time before this happened. The internet has replaced the need for such a service and broadcasters are likely looking to use even this little bit of side band for other uses.

I do remember seeing a few VCRs that had Guide Plus along with their VCR Plus.
