| Looking at a Sonos Play:3 (Needs Sonos Bridge for Wireless?) I'm looking at getting into the world of Sonos for music streaming throughout my house.
I'm wondering if I already have a couple of wireless APs set up if I will still need a Sonos bridge in order to use the Sonos Play:3 wirelessly? In other words, is there something proprietary about their wireless set up that I have to buy their bridge or am I good to go with any old wireless AP?
Thanks! -- ♬ Music is life ♬ |

| And here's the answer (per their support site):
At least one Sonos component must be hardwired to your network. If there are no Ethernet connections where you wish to have music, the Bridge is an inexpensive way to hardwire into your network.
The reason for this is Sonos establishes its own proprietary wireless mesh network called Sonosnet. Sonosnet is specially designed for streaming synchronized audio, unlike traditional WiFi.
This also allows you to place your WiFi and Sonos on different channels, so that even if you are downloading large files or streaming video on your home WiFi, you will not disturb the music on Sonos. -- ♬ Music is life ♬ |

bryank join:2000-03-23 Plainfield, IL | reply to darcilicious I love it when people talk about Sonos...I only have a Play:5 and a Sonos Connect and use it regularly. I wish I had the need for more zones, but I just don't. You will love the system! |

| Well I was looking forward to it but now it turns out doesn't do AirPlay directly so now I'm re-thinking it. I'd really like to play songs directly from my iPhone but I haven't totally ruled out the Sonos... -- ♬ Music is life ♬ |

| reply to bryank Okay, so we went ahead with the Sonos purchase (to get the $100 Amazon gift certificate with it ). I realized that as long as I can access my iTunes library/playlists and Spotify, I'm good to go
I expect we will like the darn thing so much we'll eventually get more for the rest of the house -- ♬ Music is life ♬ |

| reply to darcilicious Yea, AirPlay is a little redundant when you have access to the entire iTunes Library. I actually find myself not even using my 8000 mp3 files I have and using Pandora, Spotify, or Local Radio streams the most; unless I am in the mood for something specific. |

sirchiefPremium join:2001-12-14 Cromwell, CT | reply to darcilicious Good news! I got this email from Sonos last night.
I did the update and it works awesome!
Here's the email:
The latest software upgrade helps you play even more music, quickly, in deep, richly textured HiFi sound. Sonos now plays your iTunes® music direct from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch® anywhere there is a Sonos speaker or player. No more syncing your Apple® mobile device with your computer just to hear your iTunes music on Sonos. (iOS 6 required)
Reach your music with three easy steps:
Update your Sonos system software and Sonos Controller Apps
Ensure your iPhone is on the home wireless network and launch the Sonos Controller App
Go to the main music menu
Now, as a music source, you'll see your iTunes songs, playlists and podcasts are all available to play on Sonos under "This iPhone."
All your iTunes music, now direct from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. |

darciliciousCyber LibrarianPremium join:2001-01-02 Forest Grove, OR kudos:2 | I'm probably going to go with paired Play:3s in the two larger rooms and just a single Play:3 in the smaller rooms... -- ♬ Dragon of good fortune struggles with the trickster Fox ♬ |
