Why in the name of would anyone gold plate a camera? I looked quickly, but I couldn't find any info on that one.

I just did a search on gold plated cameras. I am amazed at how many there were and why they came about.

I haven't read up on the gold plated ones. Was just stunned at the prices of them at auction. Personally I don't think any camera is worth those prices regardless of who or what they have taken photos of.

Here's a great article on Duncan, who was with the Marines at the siege of Khe Sanh. What a life! (pun intended)

He was a fantastic photographer no doubt. But that is still a hefty price for a camera. His work may be worth that much but the camera ?

Yeah, it's a lot of money! For a lot less, I just ordered a copy of his "Yankee Nomad : A Photographic Odyssey" Hardcover book, like new condition (but dust jacket is torn) for $1.00 +$3.99 shipping.

Check out this one-of Leica lens that is valued at $2,000,000.

Only an Arab Sheikh would think of spending that kind of money on a lens. Can you say "status symbol???"

Manufactured in 1955, the camera is one of four ever made

Not defending the price, but we're talking an extremely limited edition, used by a big name.

I guess it didn't sink in that there were only 4 made I thought that was just on the gold plated one. But even then it is still a hefty price.

The camera was out of my price range,

However, I just got Duncan's book "A Yankee Nomad" (second edition, hardback with dust jacket) in the mail this morning. For a buck plus shipping, it's the best bargain I ever got!

It's beyond wonderful. The stories and letters that accompany the photos are great reads and provide a first person narrative of history, including WWII, Postwar Middle East, Korea, Viet Nam, China, Soviet Union and his friendship with Pablo Picasso.

For those interested, there are still several good used copies available on Amazon.
