Operation: Chilled Beer

I have a huge charity event that I am putting on at a hockey arena this weekend on Saturday. I have to be there at noon on Saturday and it should be over by 2:15-2:30 in the afternoon. So for 2.5 hours or so, I need to figure out a way to keep the beer cold. I have 4 cases of 24 cans of beer to keep cold, but there are some issues with this project.

First, no coolers are allowed. Mainly because security won't let them through the door. The organization will look the other way if the beer is in bags, but thats it.

Here are some ideas I had.

1. Put the beer in the freezer for 3 hours and it should stay cold until we are ready. If it freezes a little, it should thaw well before gametime.

2. Bring bags of ice in the hockey bags and use the sinks/showers to keep the beer on ice until the game starts.

3. I really don't want to spend for a waterproof bag, but thats an option as well.

Any ideas?

Leave it on the ice in the arena.

Haha, kinda hard to do that since we will be playing on it.

I'd vote against freezing the beer as it will affect the taste and carbination. (if you're drinking Bud, Miller, or Coors go ahead it can't taste much worse)

How about putting a black trash bag inside the hockey bag with ice and beer?

Do a pass on the ice with the Zamboni machine before the event starts and then put the beer in the Zamboni machine full of ice.

Is it not cold enough where you are that you can leave the beer in the car and then simply bring it in at the right time? Then if need be use Kilroy's suggestion?

What about storage containers, something like these but just buy them locally at Meijer or Wal-Mart. You could get one or two rather cheap, or if you have some at your house already just use those. You could carry something in them to give them some legitimacy.

This may be our best option right here.

I think we may try this as well. Going to try a couple dry runs.

The beer is Molson Canadian.

This sounds like the best idea! Clearly very effective and not a lot of stuff to carry around. Even if you have to dump the ice from the Zamboni in a pile it would work great.

Final results:
Ice + water + salt: 5 minutes --> 35.9 degrees
Ice + water: 15 minutes --> 44 degrees

Chill them in a van (plastic garbage cans??) in the brine mix, and bring the beer inside in a duffle bag in batches as needed

Three hours in the freezer would not only ruin the beer, it would ruin the inside of the freezer.

Its a hockey arena.... if well chilled before (be careful of freezer that will ruin it if starts to freeze) how warm could it possibly get?

Ok, here's your solution:

Large cardboard boxes and dry ice. Dry ice is Frozen carbon dioxide, it won't make the cardboard boxes soggy. You will need gloves so you don't end up damaging your hands, the stuff will cause instant frostbite, so avoid handling it with bare hands.

Dry ice is available widly, do a yellow pages search for ice and call around.

If they won't allow boxes, use paper bags and dry ice. Whatever container and dry ice. The beer will be very cold since dry ice is colder than water ice.

Guy came up with a solution here... Hijack Zamboni, operate on ice with beer in tank... take zamboni outside when done to empty... enjoy beer!

Dry ice is a tad overboard for 2 cases of beer for a 2 hour event when the beer can be chilled in advance.

We have our solution.

We are just going to keep the beer in bags in a car parked nearby. With about 8 minutes left, they will run out, retrieve the beer, and bring it in. its only supposed to be about 35 outside that day so it should stay cold.

Zamboni - instant shaved ice. See if the Zam operator will let you borrow some snow. Pile it up - jam the beer inside and then before you leave have a couple of buddies shovel the snow outside to melt.
