Sounds like your work Wi-Fi is on the 5GHz band which the iPhone does not have a radio for.

Sorry, I do not know the answer to your question.

Edit - I am wrong. After I double checked I see the 5GHz Wi-Fi radio was added to the IPhone 5 (it's not in any previous iPhone). I have read it can take a little longer to find a 5GHz signal.
