Re: [Home Networking] Can't get router to connect to internet

You need you put the Zyxel 645M or Netgear DSL modem into bridged mode (RFC 1483) and then setup the N600 router to do PPPoE.

You'll need to get a telnet client for your MAC to bridge the 645M, instructions are as follows,

1. Telnet to 192.168.1.1
2. You will then be prompted for a password. Enter "1234" You will now be in the modems main menu.
3. Main Menu. Select Option 1, then choose ROUTE IP=NO and BRIDGE=YES.
(Use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the spacebar to change the values)
Move cursor to "Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel:" Press enter to save.
4. Main Menu. Select option 4 and change the "Encapsulation" to "RFC 1483".
5. Main Menu. Select Option 11, then option 1. Choose ROUTE=NO and BRIDGE=YES.
(Use the arrow keys to move the cursor and the spacebar to change the values)
Move cursor to "Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel:" Press enter to save.
6. Be sure to hit Enter and not Esc after you make your changes!
7. Main Menu. Select Option 99 (exit)

For the Netgear DSL modem, you should be able to do it inside the web-based configuration, post the model number if you're unsure on how to do it.

I've tried both Firefox & Safari, & neither will open that address. I'm entering this in the address field:

»192.168.1.1

Is that right?

That should be the right address, but it won't work with a web browser, you need to download a Telnet client for your MAC to bridge the Zyxel.

If you're using the D-Link modem though, that address (or 192.168.0.1) should work in a web browser. If you don't know how to bridge the D-Link modem, just post the model number.

My apologies I missed that important detail. Carry on, Telnet only for that very old model.
