Festive events for Christmas / holiday season

Everyone's town/city has special events, and while almost everywhere has the usual 'Santa Claus parade', there are others that people may not know about and/or are unique to your city, so share them!

1) Lights across Canada: fire up the lights on Parliament Hill and around downtown Ottawa on Dec 6th
2) CP Holiday Train: from Montreal (Nov 28th) to Port Moody (Dec 18th) with 84 stops in between (full list of stops).
3) Christmas in Merrickville (recently dubbed "Canada's most beautiful village") Nov 30th / Dec 1st

Bah! If CP or anyone else had any real Christmas spirit, they'd organize a real steam-powered train on a passenger excursion as far up to our beautiful northland as the rails allow!

I wonder if the steam train from Gatineau to Wakefield,Qc still runs in winter.. they putter along the track and serve dinner during the trip. At Wakefield you disembark and they turn the engine around on a manual turntable (all Male staff on train push ) and they you head back to Gatineau

I went about 10 years ago during the summer and it was a good time

They only run May - Oct

The Hull -Chelsea - Wakefield steam train hasn't been running for two years due to problems with the tracks (washouts from a massive June storm). It was sold and now owned by a consortium of municipalities along the route. They hope to have it back in at least partial service in 2013 but that could be delayed by leda clay in areas where they are rebuilding the track bed and looking to build a new station in the village of Chelsea. It normally ran only until the end of October.

The CP Holiday Train may be pulled by a GE AC4400 but it's still a lot of fun, especially if you get to see it at night. The car with the three lit trees on the top is the one with the stage that opens at each stop. While it would be spectacular to see it pulled by CP2816, it would be a logistics nightmare to keep her supplied with water even with the 2nd tender she pulls.

Skip to about 1:10 to see the train passing through a sub at low speed (just crossed a bridge with a speed limit):

Wow, that's cool -- but how much more impressive it would be with a steam locomotive!

Several years ago I was lucky to see it pass by on the old level crossing that was on Trafalgar road near Milton.
Pretty neat.

That's a shame. Been on that train a few times, and watched the guys turn the train around using the man-powered turnaround.

Even more so if it was a 4-8-8-4.

That's a Yank loco -- go for a 2-10-4 if you want lots of steam power.

I think it's funny that the US holiday train is in Binghampton NY tonight, while the Canadian train rolls into Ottawa (well, Merrickville and Smiths Falls) tomorrow.

The CP holiday train stop in Merrickville (pop 2850) had more than a thousand people out for the visit. I saw several vans loaded to the roof with food for the local food banks, and fun was had by all.

Sorry for the crappy picture quality; I forgot my camera so I had to use my phone, and it was pretty windy so hard to stand really still.
