franchise requires fios to be in all areas by 2014 so u may have to wait almost another 2 years but realistically fios cant be everywhere immediately. takes time, labor, money to build out nyc. its a big city and lots of streets to dig, poles to climb, access agreements with property owners to make.

I can't even get them to install FIOS. Hurricane Sandy wiped out old infrastructure but the rebuilt infrastructure will be a lot better and more modern.

Here I can't even get FIOS. It is coaxial cable plants only and the service is horrible from both of them. I have been trying to get FIOS in and am still trying but so far nothing has come of it unfortunately.

What evidence do you have that Verizon removed the backup generators from the central office? All Verizon central offices have backup generators for ALL services fed out of the office, including copper and FiOS...Now if the CO lost backup power due to severe flooding or any other natural disaster, that's a different story. Verizon lost backup power at some CO's in the NYC area after Superstorm Sandy, but the backup generators were never REMOVED from the CO's....

Out of curiosity, why would you switch to cable phone service? Is it just a matter of principle, or do you think the cable phone service will stay up indefinitely in a power outage like copper POTS does?

If it's because of power, you'll be in for an ugly surprise because neither fiber nor coax delivered phone lines are powered by the provider. In a blackout, both will only live for 6-10 hours (give or take) before your CPE equipment runs out of power and the line goes dead-- unless you've provisioned extra on-site power like a generator or extra batteries.

Also not entirely true. It depends on the services you have. POTS is regulated, DSL is not. If you transfer to FiOS for maintenance reasons and resist being upsold to a package, your voice will still be regulated and the data will still be non-reg.

copper and fios techs are both union. real reason is vz doesnt want to maintain 2 parallel networks. if u owned vz would u want to pay to maintain copper and fiber?

I lost landline dial tone for about 20 minutes early in Sandy, then it was restored. I'm in a suburb, so, unfortunately, this upgrade was the final reason to install a standby generator, which is expensive. The other straw is that my basement dry well fills up with water during monster rains, so I need to put a portable sump pump into the dry well - but the pump requires electricity. Incidentally, I have my own Netgear Ethernet router, with an Actiontec MI424WR-E between it and the COAX cable. The solution to using both turned out to be simple: put them on separate IPv4 subnets, and run a CAT5 (or CAT6) cable from a LAN port on the Actiontec router to the WAN port on the Netgear router. I configured the Actiontec's IP address and IP Distribution range to use subnet "2" by changing the 3rd octet from 1 to 2. In plain English, that means that the Actiontec's IP address is now 192.168.2.1, and the addresses it assigns to computers plugged into its LAN ports start with 192.168.2.2 and increment. The Netgear router's address continues to be 192.168.1.1, and computers plugged into it are assigned addresses from 192.168.1.2 on. Each router has a DHCP, but they play well together, because they work on separate subnets. It took several calls to FIOS solutions to figure this out, but it works wonderfully, and is really simple.

I don't believe they will offer it like that, the predictions are that Ala cart TV and On demand will take over as subscription based TV dies a slow death so you basically pay as you go or only get one channel at a time.

I have a hard time seeing this as being practical with millions of devices attempting to wireless stream unique channels, but there maybe some clever person who is thinking of or thought of that solution already.

I for one prefer my hard line and will until im forced to abandon it.

To answer both your questions: Wireless. They would rather invest in that than continue to run ground lines and replace the last mile. It makes sense to the customer, IF you can deliver the wireless speeds and service, otherwise its just a cash grab.

I would rather see us as a nation have 100% fiber than the hodge podge of whats in play today. I feel for those who will be stuck with copper/coax for the next 25 more years, and can only hope wireless services truly take off.

But faced with the tremendous growth and demand in 4G/LTE and the immense profits associated with wireless, thats what Verizon is doing. same as ATT.

Im here with 3 yrs of physics + double major in computer science and applied mathematics to share with you that fiber is our best viable technology currently available that im aware of. And that in totality it is more reliable. really sorry you went 21 cumulative days without fios phone. sincerely im sorry but it seems theres not much i or anyone else can really do for you. I think you can probably find more useful real world problems to address.
