skeechan posted : Nah, you don't know until you have driven it and while driving you will know...when you know. I generally know pretty quick if I like the car I am driving, although the salesman may have white knuckles while I'm figuring it out.

You don't learn a damn thing from others, particularly when it comes to opinion filled reviews. Look at Top Gear...Clarkson, Hammond and Cap'n Slow don't agree on much of anything. Only they know what they think is a great car after they have driven it along with a bunch of other stuff.

The evidence is simple. Do you buy a car without test driving it or do you rely solely on reviews? Why not simply trust the reviews if you believe you can draw conclusions from them? Simple, because they may be wrong. You may not have the same tastes as them.

And no, I don't buy a computer unless I've tried it. I went to the Apple Store and messed around with a rMBP, picked it up, messed with the brightness, opened text edit and typed a bunch on it, poked around the resolution settings to see how the fonts looked...all to see if I liked how it felt. The only thing I didn't get to try was the JIS layout because they don't carry them but the layout is the same as the wireless JIS so I wasn't expecting much different. I'll be looking into ordering a 27" iMac but not until I see one in the store. Not unless something is really cheap am I going to just buy sight unseen and having never tried it, the exception being my Nano and the iPhone 5 and I wouldn't have gotten the iPhone 5 had I known how bad POS6 was...I would have stuck with the iPhone 4 and iOS 5 which works like a champ. I didn't follow my own lessons and I got burned.

skeechan posted : Fact is you wouldn't know the value of a Ferrari unless you drove one, because knowing the value stems from having experience driving it along with all the other cars in its class. Only then could you really know if that Ferrari model is not only a great car but whether or not it is better than its peers.

Meanwhile talking horsepower in computers is meaningless. I'd rather have a slower machine CPU wise that offers an OS with far superior workflow like I get from OS X. I don't crunch numbers 24'7, my machines rarely see all their cores maxed. If I want to play games I'll do it on my PS3, XBOX or Wii U where the gaming experience is simply superior. I do business work, mostly ACAD and NX along with spreadsheets, endless emailing and PDF doc generation, typical office and M.E. stuff that doesn't require 4.XGHz anything. What it does require is GUI ergonomics and better synergy between apps which Microsoft has NEVER mastered and NEVER will master. Even for video editing, horsepower is largely irrelevant compared to workflow ergonomics. Yeah, big power machines will do the final encode faster but who cares if it takes you 3X longer to actually do the editing in the first place?

Redmond simply doesn't get it. Fact remains I can take a piece of crap well fermented Mac mini and get my WORK done far quicker than I ever could with one of my 6 core PCs, simply because it isn't CPU power that holds back Windows, it is the worst GUI ergonomics in the history of history that kills Windows.

Just yesterday I spent a few hours trying to get JIS keyboard support running in Windows 8 and simply couldn't. Posted in the MS forum and no one has a clue how to get it working. Googled around...lots of people with the same problem, no solutions. OS X, no problem, just plug the KB in and I'm good to go. Language support? No problem, select the language and go, nothing to DL, no menu settings buried somewhere you'll never find them...just go to System Preferences, then lang and text...done. Windows...holy crap. Just try and find the control panel using Windows 8 or any menu if you don't already happen to know the name of it from using previous versions. Try to set Windows 8 to auto login with your UN/PW if you don't know the the adv user menu is netplwiz or whatever it was. They have different settings spread across a gazillion menus. Win 8 looks like it was designed by 50000 people who never saw each other and didn't know what the others were working on. Then they put the pieces into a box and shook it really hard. It looks slick but is the most convoluted thing I've seen. It makes the Winchester House look well organized.

Oh yea, I know, everyone uses Windows. That is because they're largely Crayon eating fools sucked into the Fry's $299 laptop deal but just like McDonald's makes the most burgers, it doesn't mean they're the best...far from it.

norbert26 posted : Geeze. Ganged up on by Fandroids ! Please forgive me that the last time i had to use a SIM card was over 10 years ago when it went in the battery compartment. Its not my fault the carrier did NOT preinstall the SIM card (they installed the microSD card that went behind the same door) . If that was not possible either a pull tab or some clear instructions on how to open the door would have been nice. My point about the door is the phone was off to a bad start right out of the box. If i am at fault for anything here it is stupidity of ordering online. Had i got the phone from a brick and mortar store the card would have been installed. regardless of the sim card as i said the phone needed rooting and i honestly did not wish to put time and effort into doing so. The folks that said iPhone 5 win this round OR i'll just wait a while 5s will come along .

The routing? The map accuracy? The spoken street name?

There isn't really a native, 3D, Voice, turn by turn navigation app on WP8. You would think MS would have made something native based off of Bing maps. One cool thing with WP8 is you can choose the mapping and GPS apps to execute from system integrated features.

There is AT&T Navigator, which is overpriced at $10/month and rough around the edges. Every spoken street name seems to come out spoken with a different voice.

Nokia Maps isn't bad but it is rather basic. Nokia Drive is in beta and may have some promise if they get a little more phone integration and add traffic.

So just the fact Apple has something is what really makes it better at this point. For an iPhone 4 it's probably dead even since Apple didn't add advanced features there. The little I did get to use on an iPhone 4s wasn't a bad experience.

Michail posted : I'm actually on a Lumia 920 right now. I really love the phone but still miss the iPhone some. I switched mainly to get a bigger screen.

MS really made a good platform this time and Nokia is putting forth a surprisingly good effort as well. It's just a little bleeding edge right now. My phone and OS have only been live a few weeks. So I am expecting some issues.

As far as maps go, they kind of suck on the WP8 platform right now. Nokia Drive is in beta and rumors are it may be getting traffic soon. Nokia has a 2D version that uses the same map engine that does have traffic.
