Re: [Info] Microsoft: You just got Scroogled!

Why do you think I would use Hotmail or that crap Windows Live mail or whatever they are calling it now? I got rid of Hotmail back in 2004 when Microsoft changed their privacy policy. We had a thread about it here.

I really miss Outlook Express. I now use Thunderbird and Sea Monkey mail clients and Opera mail for dslreports mail as Mozilla based mail clients do not work with dslr mail server (sending works but not receiving).

For important mail I use an offshore provider and encryption if I can persuade the other party to use it. Since most wont, I rarely use email except for things like forum registrations.

More likely a good portion of Google users, and some of us who don't use Google regularly, don't know that there is more to Google than, "Google".

No. We are just more privacy oriented than some folks in this thread. I would never dream of using anything other than general Google engine because I want any searches to be done via Fx Google Sharing extension so my searches cannot be tracked.

Thank you Melee. We need to be reminded of this at least every day. In each and every thread you can post it into.

[Info] Microsoft Battles Google: "SWAT team"

A Political Brawler, Now Battling for Microsoft

...

SEATTLE — Mark Penn made a name for himself in Washington by bulldozing enemies of the Clintons. Now he spends his days trying to do the same to Google, on behalf of its archrival Microsoft.

Since Mr. Penn was put in charge of “strategic and special projects” at Microsoft in August, much of his job has involved efforts to trip up Google, which Microsoft has failed to dislodge from its perch atop the lucrative Internet search market.

...

Drawing on his background in polling, data crunching and campaigning, Mr. Penn created a holiday commercial that has been running during Monday Night Football and other shows, in which Microsoft criticizes Google for polluting the quality of its shopping search results with advertisements. “Don’t get scroogled,” it warns. His other projects include a blind taste test, Coke-versus-Pepsi style, of search results from Google and Microsoft’s Bing.

...

“The concept is to create a SWAT team to work with the product teams on some of their toughest problems,” Mr. Penn said.

Think again.

Google goes through every Gmail that’s sent or received, looking for keywords so they can target Gmail users with paid ads. And there’s no way to opt out of this invasion of your privacy.

Outlook.com is different—we don’t go through your email to sell ads.

after reading this thread, I added to Scroogle to my list of search engines, but can't get there.

Keep getting an error message that says "can't find server" or "can't connect to server".

Is that search engine or add-on or whatever it is still in business or still up and running?

Allow tried to connect to scroogle.com and can't get there either.

What's up?

Scroogle was a search engine that made Google searches anon.

"Scroogled.com" is a webpage ...not the same thing.

Okay, go it that scroogle as a search engine is dead and gone the way of many good things.

Moving on...

=======================================

As to the Google extension for Firefox, do you have link for it?

=======================================

As to "scroogled.com", that site promotes Outlook.com as an alternative to Gmail.

How does Outlook.com compare with Hotmail.com? Sounds like they are both Microsoft operated webmail sites. Is there a difference between them?

You actually see ADS? You don't block those? GEEEZZZ....

THis thread is not about ads on web pages. It is about google shopping formerly known as www.froogle.com

Blocking ads doesn't stop you from being scroogled on froogle.

who uses google shopping in the first place. In any case its purely transparent that the shop pays to be included.

Are google search results biased? This would be the real scandal.

Typical MS B$. The days of competing on only marketing are over.

I use it all the time to get a quick simple benchmark of street price. I don't choose a vendor from the list offered by froogle.
