| [Voip.ms] What are your selection criteria for VOIP.MS servers? Hello,
In view of recent re-occurrence of problems with toronto server, I wish to know your selection criteria for voip.ms server. I am looking for a server in Eastern N. America that's close to my city and has a history of being relatively stable or problem-free.
At present, I based my selection on the following criteria:
1. Ping test results: % loss, avg. ping time (ms)
2. Tracert test results: # of hops, avg. "hopping" time (ms)
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. |

2. Tracert test results: # of hops, avg. "hopping" time (ms)
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions. I would not necessarily use those as criteria for choosing a server. Recently, I've been trying voip.ms servers that are much farther away from me than my usual server. After placing several test calls, I didn't notice any difference in latency/call quality between the servers.
Also, the server that is most reliable for me does not have the shortest ping time or the least number of hops.
If you are having trouble with the current server that you are using, I would just pick a different one (maybe the next closest one) and see if you have better reliability.
Now if only voip.ms used SRV records and picked the best server automagically..... |

 | reply to taytong888 On a somewhat related note, has anyone been having packet loss to the Seattle server lately? It was working fine for awhile, but now I'm seeing ~1-2% packet loss on most calls.
I'm thinking about switching to Los Angeles, but wanted to see if it was just a transient thing. |
|
 | I am having packet loss with the montreal server and the tech chat at Voip.ms suggested less than 2 hours ago to move to that Seattle server....I did not change anything. Are they having issues with Seattle too ? |

| reply to taytong888 Ping is crap unless there are [extreme distances] involved or unless you have superhuman auditory processing like one of the characters on "Heroes".
Otherwise ping is just crap, spelled the same way in both countries.
I'm in metro New York region and do fine with Atlanta or Houston. Houston is a long way from here.
Have you ever noticed that Voip.MS customers NEVER end up saying [Houston there is a problem]?
That's because Houston behaves.
I'd also point out that Anveo has just one POP in the US, just one in Canada, and one in Germany. And they are very POPular anyway.
I'd also point out that CallCentric has happy customers in California, rather far from the New York server.
[OT: Metropolis is New York in the day. Gotham City is New York by night].
TL/DR:
Use whatever server works well for you. Only other factor is that the Canadian servers have the Canadian N11 codes [Canadian 311, 511, 811].
Also, you MAY need a Canadian server to use the special Canadian Pizza Hut national number [310-1010]. If you are not familiar with that, see here:
To make [310-] calls on voip.ms:
*Do not include the area code. *If you are using an ATA youll need to add 310 numbers to your dial plan. For example on Linksys, 310xxxxS0
Frankly, I say that having a good server is more important than a good pizza, or N11 codes. |

| Hello PX,
Thank you for your reply. Your posts are mostly informative and at the same time entertaining!
I am still on seattle.voip.ms server, as recommended recently by a company tech.

 | reply to PX Eliezer Thanks for the tips -- Houston does seem to be providing more stable connections. |

| reply to taytong888 My selection criteria is mostly "use the server with the least number of hops in a trace route". I figure that there are less possible points of failure if the call goes through fewer networks. I know the path the call takes after it gets to the server is hidden to me but I trust that voip.ms uses high quality stable reliable termination to get the call to the final destination. If they don't, i'd have issues even if my ata was pulled directly into their server at the POP. -- ...Who, What, When, Where, How... Why? Why Not? |

Houston does have a problem. See here. Well, even worse, I got nothing for my $ 30 in Powerball tickets.
Anyway, if Houston hiccups, there's always Atlanta. This was the subject of the well-known song, [Voiping Through Georgia]. |

| reply to grand total Perhaps someone could gather data on the reliability of the various hometown VoIP.MS servers.... |

 | reply to grand total Hello grand total,
I am interested in recording voip.ms servers performance. How do I record syslog? Which operating system? What command(s)?
Thanks! |

DID and selection criteria for VOIP.MS servers? Doesn't your server have to be where your DID is located. When I go to VOIP.MS "Manage your DID" it says my DID pop was in Seattle. If I didn't set my servers to Seattle my DID did not function correctly. Is there something I don't understand? |

I chose the Los Angeles server over the Seattle server because it seemed to have fewer call progress signalling issues.

I am a happy CallCentric customer in Northern California.

You can pick the server by logging in to your account, selecting DID Numbers -> Manage DID(s), editing the DID, and selecting the DID Point of Presence.

Re: DID and selection criteria for VOIP.MS servers? You can use any server you want, you just have to have your DID settings and your ATA's registration info set to the same server. |
