 | Is this email regarding forced upgrade to U-Verse a scam? I received an email today indicating I have 15 days to upgrade my U-Verse or I will be cutoff Jan 2. The only contact information in the email is the # 1.877.377.1686, is this a legit ATT #? Also the email indicates they have informed me before of this and I do not recall receiving an email, mail or anything with my bill. I also looked at my current bill and see no mention of this.
So is this a scam or legit?
Thanks.

| »Notice stating my AT&T DSL service will become AT&T Uverse
See this thread asking the same question. -- Hello, my name is Bill and I'm a crunchaholic...
Proud to be hosting six Crunchenstein blades, and three Foldinator blades | | | Just got off the phone and while they could not increase my current speed of 3Mbps, they did give me the $14.95 price for 1 year. Next week I get the modem and Wednesday they will change the service. Hope it is as painless as they described.

| I hope it is at least painful for you. A neighbor got shut down from DSL, moved to Uverse, and saw only a little bit slower connections, but got frustrated with more down time (went from a few minutes or less a month to maybe a couple of hours a month).
I had the same thing happen about a year later (I guess they just are not replacing any equipment, so DSL is slowly dying). But in my case I never got a Uverse carrier and they forced me to take a big price increase or take a 24 month contract. So I cancelled the 24 month contract after a couple of weeks (still in the grace period). I was really upset at the sudden cutoff, so I was not going to put up with some open-ended series of service calls until they could get a connection.
So I switched to Clear: I got performance that matched my DSL (better uploads, slower downloads, but overall equivalent). Note that most people do not, however. And it costs about the same as the Uverse month-to-month contract would have (about $15/month more than I had paid for DSL).
Some folks do have no trouble in the switch over, and are quite happy with Uverse (one of my neighbors is), but I think it depends on the equipment installer or the equipment installed(?). | | brg join:2001-01-03 Chicago, IL kudos:1 | said by cmarslett:I hope it is at least painful for you. Is that really what you meant to say?
I was not force-switched from ATT DSL to Uverse IPDSLAM; I chose to do so in July '11. My speeds nearly doubled, from 6/.768 to 12/1, and my price decreased. The cut-over, however, was nasty in the extreme. ATT simply did not know what it was doing and I had no service for an extended time and had to deal with a multitude of billing errors. Eventually all of that was resolved in my favor, with several "we're sorry" credits tossed in, and I have been happy with inexpensive bullet-proof service ever since.

A neighbor got shut down from DSL, moved to Uverse, and saw only a little bit slower connections, but got frustrated with more down time (went from a few minutes or less a month to maybe a couple of hours a month). All things considered, the experience should be relatively painless. U-verse is DSL; either ADSL2+, or VDSL.
Worst case would be due to distance. I support a DSL account for a user on a 9,156 foot loop. At that distance, best sync rate is ~5,900 kb/s. AT&T will not sell "Elite" service because that requires a sync rate of 6016 kb/s; so next tier down, at a sync rate of 3008 kb/s. A CLEC does offer ADSL2+ service to that premises, which is why I know the max rate there. AT&T does offer "U-verse HSI Pro" there, but only at 3.0 Mb/s.
The main difference between AT&T and Sonic.net, LLC in servicing that premises is that AT&T sells tiers, and will cap the service to the closest tier to the max sync rate rate which allows reliable service for a tier; for a max rate of ~5900 kb/s, the closest, fastest tier is the 3008 kb/s tier. Sonic.net, by contrast, does not sell tiers, just raw speed at the most reliable sync rate negotiated by modem and DSLAM. So AT&T will only sell 3.0 M service their, while Sonic.net is reliably delivering ~4.8 M service.
Salient differences between "at&t Yahoo! HSI" (ADSL) and "U-verse HSI" (ADSL2+/VDSL) are that the ADSL service requires PPPoE authentication, and is delivered over an ATM backhaul, while the ADSL2+/VDSL service uses 802.1x authentication and is delivered over a PTM backhaul. For those who will not see a difference in the modem sync rate because of the loop length, there should still be a slight increase in data throughput speed with the U-verse service.
I had the same thing happen about a year later (I guess they just are not replacing any equipment, so DSL is slowly dying). Much as I hate car analogies, that is like saying that the automobile is dying because Ford is ceasing production of the Model T.
"DSL" is alive and well. But AT&T ADSL (the Model T of DSL) is being replaced by ADSL2+/VDSL. AT&T is replacing equipment; upgrading ADSL to ADSL2+ in the COs and RTs, and adding ADSL2+ DSLAMS to select VRADs.
But in my case I never got a Uverse carrier ... Likely severe problems in the copper plant. If the short term revenues derived from a U-verse cut-over don't justify the capital expense required to upgrade the copper, that could happen.
Some folks do have no trouble in the switch over, and are quite happy with Uverse (one of my neighbors is), but I think it depends on the equipment installer or the equipment installed(?). Or the state of the copper in the plant.
BTW, between cost and caps, I fired AT&T and replaced them with Sonic.net, LLC. The bonus, apart from lower overall cost (Sonic.net also took over the dial tone) is nearly double the Internet speed and some voice perks which AT&T charges extra for. Unfortunately, their service, "Fusion" is only available where Sonic.net overlays AT&T in California, and only where they have their own DSLAMs in AT&T COs. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum | |
