They've already done this because there aren't many MPEG-2 channels distributed at bitrates higher than 3-to-a-QAM (~13 Mbps).

Very few channels have a bitrate higher than 13 Mbps on Verizon anymore. AXS.tv and HDNet Movies are the only two natively distributed MPEG-2 @ 13+ Mbps ones I can think of.

Verizon re-encodes some of the MPEG-4 distributed channels to 17 Mbps MPEG-2 though. It's been a while since I've checked but EPIX and ESPN were two examples of this. Pretty wasteful. MPEG4 was a necessity for sat providers as they got hit by the bandwidth crunch far sooner. Sat subscribers are also far more accustomed to assuming more of the cost of their equipment themselves which facilitated the changeover.

Just because you can pirate it doesn't make it right, or more convenient, or as good of quality as the HDTV feed.

Last time I checked not all Playboy or Hustler owned content was available for free in high definition quality on the Internet and most of the stuff that is available freely is made available as a result of copyright infringement. I have read that post. It's good to know that these 20 channels in MPEG4 will free up some space for new HD channels, and I hope that FiOS will do this same thing later this year. And continuing this to hopefully have enough space for all it's channels in MPEG4, and the future additions will be in MPEG4 from now on, as well.

They are 7xxx boxes. The hard drives for DVRs should be 500Gb. And not it "may" be a refurb, which is always the case with any hardware exchange like a replacing a dead STB.
