I consider "horrible" to be a relative measure.

For those that expect an A/V program to have a 100% detection rate, including 0-days, while they click on every link in email/IM/text messages and frequent porn/pirate/media sharing websites then MSE probably isn't for them. Then again I doubt any A/V will save them.

So in your opinion brave people have nothing to fear and therefore an AV with miserable performance, like MSE, will protect them in an adequate way?

What I'm saying is that a persons actions has more to do with them getting infected than their choice of AV. There have been threads here, a few times, about whether AV is even necessary if you practice safe hex.

That said for people that have no technical knowledge and just browse and click MSE probably isn't the best choice.

Most important among these being: that they actually use the damn thing and not just disable it "because it made my game slow!!!" or something. 60% detection all the time is better than 100% none of the time.
