Melted Plastic Casing On Microwave

One of my children has a microwave hanging over the oven. One day last week they accidentally left a burner on and it melted a little bit of the plastic casing on the bottom of the microwave. When we open the door we can see the melted area but it is not near the actual seal for the microwave. I am now wondering if they should get rid of the microwave because the melted areas might have some leakage. I would appreciate any information that the experts here can provide.

I don't like the fact that you are seeing the " melted " spot when you open the door and not before
Without seeing the unit or a picture of the damage it is impossible to tell if you have any damage to the primary ,secondary , or tertiary seal areas .
Since it is mounted over the stove , it may be a relatively expensive unit , so it might be worth having it checked by someone that has a leakage meter . Preferably a meter that has current certification .

As long as the mating surfaces of the door and frame are not damaged and the door isn't warped and closes fully, you're fine.

The plastic on the outside of the door is purely cosmetic.

A picture of the damage would help greatly.

Almost everyone has a leakage meter these days. Pull out your phone, turn on wifi, start the microwave, load up DSLReports. If you get anywhere, the microwave isn't leaking

Another note, it sounds like the microwave is mounted too close to the stove top surface if it was able to melt the plastic.
IRC says it should be 30" unless the "range hood appliance" (in your case, microwave) is listed otherwise.

+1
If it is melting just from heat from a burner then you have a clearance issue IE. improper install. I would get that corrected ASAP.

Some interesting and easy leak checks here.

They seem reasonable, but if in doubt, get it professionally tested.
Way back I had a microwave that would hammer my cordless phone and wireless router. Once I figured out the connection, we replaced the MW without any further tests.
