You don't need a good router to get more than 8 Mbps. A functioning router less than 10 years old should do the trick, which makes me think your Linksys isn't actually functioning correctly.
I would first try resetting it to defaults. If that doesn't help, see if its hardware revision would support a better firmware, such as Tomato or dd-wrt.
If a full reset and a new firmware don't solve the problem, then you likely have bad hardware. Break it over your knee in front of impressionable children.
